Too upset to type much, but we suddenly have to say goodbye to our cat. We are devastated. We can try and wait to bring him home tomorrow, but he may suffer more. On the other hand, we don't want him to have to pass in an unfamiliar place like the vet hospital (even though we'll be with him). Are there ANY house call vets in Richmond that are on call overnight? That would be so much more preferable.

Your thoughts and kindness in the comments are very much appreciated.

Edit: VRCC compassionately put Murr to rest last night. He likely had end stage cancer (though we'll never know for sure). We got to spend a good hour with him cuddling on one of his favorite blankets, and because of some temporary interventions, he was actually more alert and affectionate than he was when we brought him in yesterday morning. We made the decision to let him pass shortly after. The process was quick and peaceful, purring on us until the very end.

You guys have been so kind. It means more than you know.

Wellesley animal hospital has offered this to us in the past. Not sure if it’s only something they do for existing patients, but they might be able to direct you if they can’t. I’m so sorry for what you’re going through. We list our beloved cat two years ago on Xmas eve.

Linda Ryder, Companion Animal House Calls has been our vet for 5+ years.

Unfortunately I’m not sure she is available this evening.

I will say this, I have never had a bad experience with any vet when putting down an animal, including at clinic.

I'm sorry this is something y'all are needing now. Lap of Love is typically open later but it looks like their vets aren't available right now. I'm not sure if it's worth calling to double check in case I'm understanding it incorrectly.

Loving Kindness edit is available until the 31st but they don't open until 7:30am

This sucks and I'm really sorry you and your cat are having to go through this right now.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. It's a heartbreaking decision to make, but please know you're making the right decision.

I went through this with my dog last August and we used Loving Kindness Vet to come to the house, administer the drugs, and then take her for cremation. They were very compassionate, made sure we understood and were comfortable with what they were about to do, and gave us the time we needed to say goodbye before we called them over to get started. I'd really recommend them if they're available.

Loving Kindness appears to be available until Saturday, December 31st - Sunday, January 2nd. Sounds like OP doesn't want to wait so hopefully they'll be able to accommodate them.

I'm so sorry that you are going through this...it's such a terrible feeling. I've had to say goodbye to many pets over the years and the clinic/animal hospital is not a bad environment to say goodbye if your precious kitty is suffering. Your kitty will not know the difference, all they know is that they are unwell. Vets are always compassionate and give you all the time you need to say goodbye before and after. I've had many offer me reassuring words when I question if I'm making the right decision or not.

Again, very sorry that you are going through this.

I hate this for you, I just had to put my dog down recently and it was tough. It's going to be hard to find someone to come overnight, especially during the holiday season. Although a vet location might be unfamiliar, your cat will only know if you are there or not, so that might be the best option.

Sorry for your loss. We went though the same thing with our dog about a year ago. Any of the inhome folks listed are worth a call. All of them are super compassionate people and if they can make it happen, I’m sure they will try to accommodate.

I have not, though I have considered it. Unfortunately I’m more a tamp-your-feelings-down kind of person (working on that). I volunteer with Fetch, as my cat was a Companions in Crisis recipient a few years ago, and everyone there is wonderful. The sessions are led by a psychologist experienced in pet loss and grief.
