I like to eat eggs as a cheap source of protein, historically, but these current prices in the grocery stores are just too much. Can anybody point me in the direction of a farm/farmers market that offers fresh eggs at much better prices than the big box chain grocery stores?

Vendors at farmers markets have to charge more for their eggs than Kroger because of economy of scale.

However, you can get unlimited free eggs if you steal some chickens.

I normally get mine at farmers market like Bryan park on Saturday. I am in support of smaller farms and quality so for $5 a dozen I feel that’s fair

I'd even call the $6 that some farms charge fair. Quality, local produce is the way.

Right, not only are the costs higher for the small time farmers but the places whose eggs cost 20 cents a piece are probably getting paid awful wages.

AND, you might know but for anyone who doesn't, chickens raised more naturally have eggs that are healthier for us by several markers (less cholesterol and saturated fat and more of vitamins, omega-3s, etc.) They haven't really found a taste different in blind tests but once cooked they def. look way prettier on a plate with the deep color of yolk.

Wow that makes me realize I was getting a deal. Over the summer at azalea flea market there was a guy selling eggs. I think it was $3 for a dozen but he hasn't been there for a month.

The cheapest local produce was at Azalea flea market.

Kroger sells an 18 count carton for $3.18 + tax.

That's around 19¢ an egg. Hard to get cheaper than that. Even if you have your own chickens, you have to spend to feed and house them, and then go dig around for the eggs. Though, I guess the quirky personalities of the chickens is priceless.

When people talk about cheap egg prices, or consider the cheapest options at grocery stores, I really wonder if they have any idea what conditions inside commercial production hen houses are like. I’ve been around them before. Just about single hen was infested with fleas all the time. Who knows what else. Routine broad spectrum antibiotics are used to keep disease pressure (and deaths) down; but that doesn’t eliminate problems altogether.

Pay a few more dollars for your eggs each week. It’s worth it.
