Does anyone have kids at Johnson elementary? I'm looking at some rentals in this school zone but I'm having trouble finding much about it online. My kiddo is starting kindergarten this fall.

Veteran teacher here. It's a decent school. The Parham road is the dividing line for Henrico,. The farther east you go, usually the more behavioral problems and the farther west you go, more entitlement. Johnson is right in that line. I've had friends teacher there and friends kids go there. It's in a transition into a more immigrant heavy school.

I don't have kids there, but it's my Rotary club's main service project, so I'm relatively familiar with their struggles. It's a school that wants to be better, but still has a way to go to get there. One of their biggest hurdles is that ESL is a huge barrier there. More than 40 different languages are spoken as the native tongue for the students there. That said, they have a caring principal and my club has built community gardens for them, do classroom reading to students, a welcome back to school carnival in the fall, and various other projects. You may want to see if you can afford other districts in Henrico.

Speaking multiple languages is an asset, not a "barrier." Having classmates and friends from a variety of different countries and cultures is a benefit for children who will become adults in this global society. So if you take that into consideration along with the caring principal and the other events the school hosts that enrich the school community, why would you suggest the OP send their kid elsewhere?

I think you and I disagree on what makes for a bonus in an elementary learning environment.

That said, it’s a school in a transition, hopefully a positive one. There are far better schools in the area, I just suggested OP should looks into them.
