Went to McLean's for the first time recently for breakfast, no idea why it took us so long since it's a short walk away. It's basically a non-chain waffle house complete with coffee mugs that advertise land surveyors and personal injury lawyers, but honestly that's exactly what you want sometimes. Cheap, quick, and good. Surprised at how big it actually is once you're inside. Still haven't been to Moore St which is also a short walk away, someone convince me we still need to give it a shot.

Also went to El Pope again recently. The tortas and pupusas remain excellent, but I have a bad feeling that the place is maybe circling the drain since their beer taps haven't been functional for weeks, they only had a couple of incredibly bright lights on with a bunch of others off with no bulbs, the liquor bottles behind the bar all looked mostly empty... just had a "selling off what we have left" vibe, plus there was no music playing which is an odd thing in a mostly quiet restaurant. I hope I'm wrong and they are able to remain afloat.

Jardin: have gone here a couple of times recently, it's still surreal being in the old Baja space and not smelling vomit/spilled stale beer. They had a real jamon iberico leg for one of their charcuterie meats which is just about my favorite thing ever, bartender is a good dude after chatting with him for a while, patio is cozy... it's nice, just very much west end couples coming into the city for a date night vibes which some people may be put off by.

Moore Street is superior to McLean's in just about every way except they stop serving breakfast at 1030.

Moore St. Cafe has cheap, delicious, & consistently solid diner food + large portion sizes. They also have inexpensive mimosa pitchers that you can get housed on if you aren't careful. The owner & his staff are friendly & deliver solid service -- a big perk in my book. They even have Kuba Kuba's house hot sauce if you ask for it (tasty and pairs well with brekkie). Enjoy!

I think Mcleans is totally a hidden gem for what it is. Classic old school southern diner. Been a while since I was there since I'm avoiding carbs, but it was always pretty packed, and pretty cheap

El Pope has actually been busier the last few times I went, I hope it isn't going down

I would take Moore Street over McLeans. Better vibe, faster service, and sorry for bringing politics into it, but if such things matter to you, McLeans is super Trumpy, always has Glen Youngkin there anytime he needs a photo op in a diner setting.

McLeans used to have a great chicken fried style steak but switched over to a frozen one. Moore street also has a frozen one, but when I asked at Moore they told me so.

Trump does bother me, Youngkin doesn't. I assume it's all frozen at that price point, but somehow how it is cooked matters. Flavors have always been on point at Mcleans. I do want to try Moore, but flip side more of a pain to get into

Moore Street is good but I will never wait an hour for diner food. mcLeans breakfast bar is first come first served while Moore wants you to get on a list for it

jardin is honestly one of the best spots in richmond right now to chill and have small plates. their sandwiches are fantastic.

I hope El Pope is ok. The owner just opened up another place nearby (The Nest) and maybe they're having a hard time balancing the two.
