Hello fellow redditors. Wanted to see if anyone was going to the Norfolk Ikea store anytime soon and wanted to make some money and help me out loads by picking up very big and presumably heavy closet pieces. The company I knew of who used to do this only does assembly now and I’m a Lego kid so I don’t need that part.

The biggest of the boxes is 96.5” long and weighs over 120 lbs for reference.

Thanks!

If you sign up for IKEA family for free the delivery cost is not terrible. I’m looking at getting a bed and a couch, shipping is only $49.

There’s an ikea pickup location in Chester as well.

Drunken brewery thoughts: We need an Ikea and we should steal Norfolk's.

Why?

  • Norfolk never gets snow.
  • You can't even pronounce Norfolk phonetically
  • Who movin there over RVA? Nobody

omigod is it. Really Horrible in Richmond. They lie about things being delivered all the time.

I had an expensive part sent to me. 1k+. Fedex sent me an email saying it was delivered. It wasn't. I freaked out, thinking I was going to be in hell of everybody passing the buck, and called the manufacturer.

They said, oh, not a problem, we haven't shipped it yet. Fedex marked it delivered before it was shipped.

I literally bought a ring doorbell not for crime, but for fedex

Was it just not available for shipping at all?

They also have a pick-up location in Chester. I literally just ordered an IVAR unit yesterday and it wasn’t available for delivery but I was able to get it shipped to the pick-up location there. Will be able to get it this Wednesday.

You don’t have any friends with a truck? I was told Richmond was in the South.

I work in logistics and I’m bored so I did a little math to show you why you probably won’t entice a driver at $75 unless your path and theirs align pretty closely. Delivery joints running the kind of route you’re looking for stay afloat through volume.

Let’s assume you did this run yourself with a pickup truck. You can rent them from U-Haul. Rates for RVA are $19.95+$.89/mi(200mi)+$3.10/gal(10gal)=$228.95ish for a day rental. The equipment cost of $.89/mile is a pretty average reimbursement rate to account for the maintenance cost incurred by using the car. Minus the $20 U-Haul is charging on top of that, you’re still looking at ~$200 trip without the cost of someone else’s time and labor.

Edit: actually, let’s call it ~$170 trip. I should have subtracted the cost of gas to account for the mileage rate U-Haul is charging.

Yeah they didn’t have the pick up location option or delivery option for the item item I was looking at. Just store pickup only. I sincerely do appreciate the Chester call out though that will help future me out a bunch.

JUST there this weekend and would have picked it up for you for free… IF it fit which it seems unlikely. Needless to say, I’m sorry for being of no help!
