I used to work with this co-worker/friend about 15-years ago, until he was let go by my company for performance-related issues. However, we regularly stayed in contact to talk about our kids, our jobs, other friends, and would periodically meet for lunch a few times a year. About 5-years ago, he cut off all contact with me and blocked me on social media. When a mutual friend we both worked with died unexpectedly in May 2018, I called to tell him, but ended up leaving him a voicemail. This was when I realized the friendship was over and he had blocked me, as I couldn’t reach him via FB while my other friends still could.

Someone once told me I had posted a comment that this friend found offensive and that was the reason for ending the friendship and all communications, but I could never determine what it was that he found offensive, so I moved on with my life and didn’t look back. I deleted his contact information from my work PC and ended our LinkedIn connection. About 2-years ago, I noticed he had unblocked me on FB because I started seeing comments from him again on other friend’s postings, so I decided to block him at this point—it might sound petty, but I genuinely didn’t want to be reminded of him.

So now I have a text notification from him, and I’m not sure what to do next. I have not read the text, and quite frankly I’m just wondering if I should swipe it away and delete it without reading it, or reply back to him with a message indicating that I’m not interested in rekindling a lost friendship. There would be no other reason for him to contact me.

TL; DR: Received a text from an old friend who ended contact with me 5-years ago. Should I just delete it, read it and delete it, or read it and reply?

Thanks for your responses. I was able to see the message preview, and he only indicated that it’s been a few years and hoped my family and I were doing well. I swiped to delete the message and then blocked his number.
