That's it. India point park was once a major port. The brown family was involved with the east India company. It's probably well explained in that article but I can't read.

I'm actually reading a book right now that mentions the reason!

Haha, while Google is a helluva drug, in this case, none of those answers are helpful

The park takes its name from the maritime activity connecting Providence with the East and West Indies.

India point was where the old port of providence came in. The river used to flow to the bottom of benefit street for the brown family and because of them and the east and west indies trading company. The port used to connect up to the tunnels coming from benefit street to the east side at varying points. Including the one still used (converted) by ripta. And it all connects to the brown family and their slave trade.

I forgot to add the providence River has been moved several times. Most recent configuration was when I was a kid. I watched from my rooftop.

So what you're saying is that Brown University is named after racists and should be renamed Floyd University in honor of the greatest American to ever live, George Floyd

Yes, that's what the Wiki article says.

While I agree with your sentiments, I feel there are local African families and native families, affected then, who still live here, that should take precedence if something like that were to take place.

I wondered if Let Me Google That For You still existed. Nice to know that it does, I guess, but yes, the results were completely useless for India Point in Providence. A bad idea to post without checking.

No idea but I’m going to assume it’s because of old time global trade and that it used to be the port for the city. Maybe something to do with the Dutch East India company or something?
