For context im balls to the wall high but i was driving through downtown earlier and saw multiple college shuttles of different origin. So i was wondering exactly how much of providence (maybe just downtown) is just college? Like providence is an insanely small city and i cant seem to find myself off a college campus or not within viewing distance of some sort of school building. Like boston has a fuck load of schools but even there the downtown area is pretty clear of college stuff aside from a few buildings.

Providence has IVY League "Brown University (MOST of the East Side and Downtown, including Thayer Street)", The greatest art school in the country "RI School of Design", "Providence College", "Johnson and Wales", "RI College (several locations)", THEN "University of Rhode Island", "Bryant University", "Roger Williams University" & "Salve Regina University", we might be a small state but we pack a lot of colleges and universities!

Brown is not planning any further expansion in the East Side, but does has plans to buildout more in the Jewelry District. Given the current state of that area, I don’t think too many people are disappointed by plans to expand there.

Compared to 5-6 years ago, the Jewelry District is really starting to look good. It used to be so barren over there, now it feels busy and thriving.

I think the proper campus areas probably come out to 1 sq mile maybe? Obviously schools own plenty of real estate outside that area and there’s a ton of property that’s just student housing.

The city is like 18sq miles total so it’s a pretty significant chunk.

Your pretty close. Thisarticle is from 2013 so i would think numbers might be up slightly but 5th paragraph says 8% is owned by higher ed.

Johnson and wales owns a pretty sizable chunk both on its harbor side and Downcity campus - plus it’s expanding and has a few smaller buildings throughout downtown and in that new development. It’s probably the same size as Brown when you put it all together. Plus let’s not forget PCs insular little campus
