I searched Providence’s municipal court FAQ, but got contradicting secondhand info - does anyone know if you receive a summons for a parking violation with the court date to appear on it, can you show up and appear on a different date prior to the one listed? Is an appointment absolutely required to? For more background, one ticket is for parking in a tow zone for $300, not sure if this infraction requires different process etc. The date to appear is Monday next week, but I want to go this Wednesday to contest. Thanks in advance!

ETA: should've included it in here instead of copying and pasting to replies, and for anyone else to know in the future who have to deal with it but I called the municipal court and a clerk confirmed that walk ins are available the day of! You just need to check in with the clerk by 8am. This is for parking violations only, and only on MWThF only.

I don’t think you get to show up whenever you feel like. Generally not how courts work. You show up when they tell you to.

You could write them a letter and tell them you’re really sorry and your grandma fell and you had no choice but to park and run inside to help. Usually they let you off if it’s your first rodeo.

Caveat, that I have not been since Covid, but for a parking ticket it used to be that you could show up on an earlier date and be heard. Makes no difference for the type of parking ticket - they never have the person who issued the ticket present anyway.

This does not hold true for other offenses heard in municipal court.

Having done this successfully, I’d just call the main line for Providence municipal court (or traffic court, whichever one the summons tells you to go to) and request a continuance to whatever date works for you. It’s basically a guaranteed yes.

There are court lists. You can’t just show up whenever. If you want to pay it early then you can go in and do that. If there’s extenuating circumstances you can call and see if you can move your date, they may let you. Just showing up is no good, though.

You had your chance to schedule a hearing when you got the ticket. Since a normal tow zone ticket is only $100, I’m guessing you ignored it for at least a month and the fine tripled.

You fucked around and found out. You had every chance to handle it easily on your own terms in a timely fashion, but you didn’t. Now you’ve got to go when they say.

That is what I thought as well - court and records etc are very specific and need to be prepared + I can only imagine how many parking violations there are to be seen lol. But I just called the municipal court - they have walk ins available to be seen the day of, you just have to show up and check in at 8am sharp! For parking violations only.

I didn't know you could write them a letter, that's kinda cool lol. But nah I'd rather not lie and can own up to the infraction, but would just like to show up to request it be discounted. I personally do not have a driving record or any tickets like this, but the person who borrowed my car these two dates got it, and claimed they never saw the ticket for the tow zone one.

Thank you! I called this morning to try that and they confirmed same day walk ins are accepted, as long as you show up by/at 8am and not on a Tuesday.
