Driving into Providence for 2 days….Any must see sights and places to eat?

First time…Kind of a spur of the moment road trip from NY since me and my wife have some time off from work at the same time which is rare. Going to be heading out tomorrow night. Also bringing a small dog so more interested in take out spots for foods since I’ll obviously be restricted bringing her into places.

Any areas/sights/parks that are of the “can’t miss” variety?

Moniker Brewery: lots of outdoor space to sit and bring your pup. Sometimes there’s a pop up food truck there or grab some take out from Pizza J, The Sandwich Hut, or Yi Noodle Bar all within walking distance and eat it there. Grab a tricycle ice cream sandwich across the street too. For parks I’d add India Point/The River Walk pedestrian bridge, Prospect Park is great view of the city at sunset and great spot to bring take out to eat there.

Roger Williams Park is a beautiful Olmsted-designed, huge park-I highly recommend for dog-friendly Providence visit. I would probably stop at Cafeteria Frias, near there, and get lunch to eat in the park. They have good sandwiches, pastelitos, juice, smoothies. There are a bunch of places on Broad street, which runs along the east side of the park where you can get dominican food to take out.

Ok thanks. Good to hear that I won’t be so limited after all having the dog with us.

As far as driving goes…should I anticipate NY style city driving or more laid back?

Drivers and pedestrians and people on dirt bikes and in those batmobile things can be chaotic in their choices, but it's pretty rare that you run into significant traffic or trouble parking in Providence.

The dirt bike/Batmobile style thing to “regular car” ratio in my neighborhood in NY is about 7 ( Batmobile/dirt bike) to 3 (regular ) so I’m pretty use to all that. It’s beyond excessive in my area though lol and I don’t remember the last time I didn’t have to struggle to find parking so I’m happy to hear that.

RISD museum is FREE on Sundays. World class museum: ancient art, great impressionist collection, lots of cool design, fashion and furniture stuff too. Good coffee shop.

Disagree. Moniker has the best outdoor space and location. Great to be out by the fire pits and food trucks and on west fountain.

I love the beer at long live but dont send this guy to deep west end rather than the cool part of federal hill.

This, and walk down benefit street. End with food on wickenden or near the pedestrian bridge.

Walk down Westminster, the great downtown street.

Walk down Atwells, our little Italy, and go to Venda market.

The Saturday farmers market on simms Ave is also eventful and there are good breweries next door.

West End/ Federal Hill:

Food/Beer: Long Live Brewery* (outdoor seating); Slow Rhode* (d, outdoor seating); Pastiche Desserts (amazing cakes and tarts, unfortunately no indoor seating since COVID); Ogie's (weekend brunch, dinner)

Shops: If you're here on a Sunday, the Providence Flea is at 10 Sims and runs from 10-3pm I think. There's also food, coffee, and ice cream in the building which is an indoor market **; White Buffalo, Nest, Frog and Toad*

Narragansett Brewery is dog friendly and walkable from downtown. That’s my positive contribution. 🫠🫠🫠

Definitely a must! India Point Park.

Drive to East St to near the south end of it and park. Then walk across the pedestrian bridge (has a spectacular view of Providence Harbor) and walk to the right to the Community boathouse, and begin by reading the history plaque there.

Turn around to face east and walk the entire coast of the park reading the 10 or so historical plaques. It's the entire history of Providence, the first colonial settlement in RI.

When you reach the end at Brown Boathouse, circle back just a bit to Narragansett Brewery with outdoor tables, dogs allowed.

Then make your way a couple blocks inland to Ives St. Lots of tiny eateries and cafes there to choose from. From there you'll be a few blocks from your car.

Looks like Sunday will be the better day, weather-wise. Enjoy!
