Get a passport and a passport card.

The card was designed specifically for people who make frequent land border crossings with Canada or Mexico and don't want to carry the full size passport.

You can get just the card. But if you're going through all the trouble, might as well get the passport as well unless cost is an issue or you have another compelling reason not to.

Agreed. The card doesn't work on flights. I don't think it's worth the cost, just get a regular passport.
