It’s been one month since my house burnt down. Updates: I haven’t been allowed into the property since the fire happened to retrieve any items; not until major claims adjuster could fully evaluate the property. They’ve (finally) released it, but I’m not all that hopeful about items being salvageable after a month in a house unattended. From what I’ve been learning, mold and water damage will be in effect and the soot/smoke has had time to really set in. The insurance company is misleading and will ask you to obtain the arson investigator’s report. Don’t do that, because it’s THEIR job. You also need to subpoena and petition in court for a full arson investigator’s report. Not having exact receipts for furniture and generalized estimates of how much things cost drags the process out so much longer. Get your furniture appraised, not just your jewelry, electronics, etc. Allegheny Fire department is not the same as Pittsburgh fire department. Who woulda thought? PFD arson investigators are the greatest, though. They were the ones who told me that the insurance company is the one who should be getting the arson report, not me. To no one’s surprise, I’m not sleeping all that well. I’ve made the decision to move on from that house( though I so, so so love that house.) I’m looking for a new place now. It’s up in the air if it’s worth trying to salvage items; photo albums, my law degree/stole, and books are all toast. The amount of effort to assembly line vinegar, baking soda and wash things 3x may be too much.

I got laid off in the aftermath of the fire as well, understandably so; I no longer had a laptop to do work. Looking for remote work and a place to live at the same time—- 0/10 would recommend 😅.

I’m trying to find a new place to live; does anyone know of any good houses in Mt. Washington that may be available? Thanks again for all of the help and suggestions last time yinz. Can’t wait to come back home to the city. Betty White pictures for tax.

What's your field? DM me a LinkedIn if you want, as I'm a remote worker at a huge multinational that will never require I show up in person.

Is your rental insurance working with you? I recall in the last post there was an issue with the address on the policy even though you were paying into it

They are still investigating the causes behind the fire, and if they have obligations to pay out for any items. I didn’t have items appraised, so that’s really not helping me. I hate that they’re so deeply suspicious, it makes me want to throw my phone at the wall sometimes.

You got it in one; I had no idea why they took so long to evaluate it, but I have little to no hope that my property in there is in any good shape.
