I was stunned back then when you could get a whole meal from a supermarket in Germany (including a sandwich, couscous, and a shake) for only 4 euros. You can barely if at all get a sandwich for $4 in the U.S. even back then.

It's still that cheap. It's a chain bakery known for cheap, low-quality products and the worst coffee you ever had.

It's not just there though, the supermarkets especially had a lot of surprisingly cheap food including sandwiches and bakery products.

BTW, your telling me cheap and we in the U.S. have cheap Mcdonalds and Walmart and it still doesn't get anywhere that low of a price even back then.

Well, I live in Greece, so everything has always been more expensive here than the rest of Europe. Well, not always expensive, but the ratio of payment-cost of living is different here. But this is one of the worst times of European economy i believe (excluding the Greek financial crisis of the previour decade).
