That's the best sign of spring there is. Onions want to be in the ground this time of year.

Plant them now and in a few months, you'll have bunches of onions. They take a while to grow but yes, they are easy to grow.

Potatoes and garlic will as well. Potatoes are often sprayed though (I think) to prevent this from happening.

Also - search for organic foods as they are more likely to tuber and grow.

we will be planting these for sure!! just crazy how they grew with no soil, barely any sunlight, no water.. we just forgot about them in the pantry and pulled them out to find that they grew crazy fast

An onion is a storage root, containing all the water, sugar, and nutrients the plant requires. It would have eventually needed light, but this is literally why onions make onions.

Life, uh, finds a way.

Potatoes, onions and more will sprout if you let them.

I have these too, from onions sitting in a bin we haven't used. The tops make a solid scallion replacement when needed.

I potted mine a few months ago and i'm not sure if they're taking root. Is there a specific way to plant onions?

Few months ago? Indoor or outdoor. Could it be because if the weather? I am no expert but I think it was not the right time if the year. Unless maybe inside with the heater and the sun but even then am not sure. I never planted them before spring....

Also when they are really hollow and no roots they tend to die.

Outdoor. The stocks are still growing so I think it's fine. I just noticed that the outer layer of the onion is still in there. I thought for sure it would have been broken up by the roots by now. I mean, it is healthy. Especially after the recent rainfall where I am. I honestly just blindly put it in some dirt and hoped for the best. haha

Well if they are alive and green they should be fine. (seems your weather was not too cold), they should multiply and grow. . you will get spring onions.

Lol it's ok in general yeah you put them in soil and they grow lol with few exceptions of course.

I did the same with the potatoes
