I don't know why, but this strangely reminds me of a sporting goods store -- like some game would be played by swinging your meat like a baseball bat. It doesn't look like food to me.

They are everywhere in Spain, like every shop, super markets have racks and racks of them. Are they all sold.

How much?
Those hams’ll cost you a parm and a leg.

Nah, the willies are in the next aisle

I don't live in an area where meat is sold like this. Do people wash them when they get home? It kind of weirds me out that they are not wrapped in anything. How do you know how many dirty fingers have handled them? Is the room refrigerated, or are they just out in a normal temperature room?
Glanwy t1_jegcz36 wrote
No idea, it was when I drove thro Iberia on a few occasions. But not refrigerated just out in the open, some supermarkets even have a dedicated counter & team ready to slice them thru a band saw for you.

Think of the outer layer like the rind of a fruit you don't eat. Same idea. It is there to preserve the meat and is carved off to serve.

Normal temperature. The brown part is literally fat. You cut the fat and you use it as a cover. Its cut with a especial knife in thin layers. If you dont know how use that knife is very dangerous. For people that dont know or dont want visit a surgeon exists the option of pre-cut envelopes. That are conserved in a fridge.

Lots of bars as well…..best hams in the world. Nobody does ham better than the Spaniards.
marioquartz t1_jegrgj1 wrote
If you dont cut it, and you left in a normal temperature can last 90 days. Once you cut it the outer layer no more than 15 days.

Nice! Thanks for answering

The number in black with yellow background is the final price with taxes and in euros. So these are between 115 and 159 euros. The full leg. So from 125 to 173 dollars.
They are not cheap, but with one leg you can have ham for a family eating daily for one week.

Well, there's two of those per animal so it's not as many as it seems.
OrbusUnum t1_jegylx4 wrote
That is interesting but weird
Yorhanes t1_jeg011l wrote
You can even give them a lick to see if you like the taste. But only one per ham per client!
