I saw that billboard this morning on my way to work and got immediately, viscerally angry. He has to be doing this on purpose, right?

illydelphia t1_j2p3aup wrote

Feel like he’s either just mocking Philly at this point or trying to be like a Saul Goodman (very horribly) or bit of both

You have to think that the actual guy doesn't make any of these decisions on how to advertise in local markets, right? I mean, he's a Florida lawyer atop a national personal injury firm, there is probably a local advertising team that gets updated seasonal pic and a little flex to use them appropriately. Like true Philly people, this crack team knows that the most effective way to drill a personality into the community consciousness of this city is through vitriol.

throwawaitnine t1_j2p4oh4 wrote

I was thinking about it the other day. How many people are gonna slip and fall in the Acme and they need a lawyer and they got no idea who to call and the only person they can think of is Jawn Morgan?

Probably a lot of people.

I half expect him to show up in adverts wearing Philly sports gear next, despite likely being unable to name one of our teams let alone a starting player.

He has these billboards putting across a gross sense of entitlement, like people should choose him to get redress on their career-ending injury, simply because they spot words like "Jawn" on his ads and they (as blue collar workers who didn't go to law school like him) are presumably too dumb to know any better when it comes to picking an attorney.

Yet at the same time his radio ads are pretty serious, stressing the firm's size and reputation.

Either way, it seems jumbled, unprofessional and mismanaged: that alone would make go elsewhere if I needed representation.

It's been an unbelievably brilliant ad campaign. The butthurt on this subreddit is a joke, as the word has been played out, misused, etc for a long time now. It's not worth gatekeeping, and his staking claim to it like that is hilarious and absurd.

omygoodnessreally t1_j2pajah wrote

Hahahhahhaahhaha go bo Edit: doubling down is 💯 more "philadelphian" than "jawn." It's brilliant.

I grew up in Orlando where this sleeze bag comes from. I still can't believe I now have to deal with his shit here now too. He's not even a lawyer anymore as I recall.

2

DuvalHeart t1_j2piwxy wrote

You mean Orlando? Where people generally like him. And he's known mostly for being an alcoholic that regularly buys a dive bar rounds. And has done more to legalize marijuana than anyone else?

Edit: Morgan was also a big pusher of Florida's $15 minimum wage push a few years ago.

John Morgan is from Orlando.

And people don't like any attorney because the 1980s and 1990s were full of corporate propaganda discouraging litigation because it was the last resort after the regulatory state was dismantled. And personal injury is often focused at corporations, not individuals.

Yes, they are everywhere up here. He's got one during baseball season where he's in the Red Sox uniform, he had a Christmas on where he was Santa. My wife who is a graphic designer always talks about the bad Photoshop job they do on the ads

Lawmonger t1_j2pp4pc wrote

I was an attorney for 16 years and I work in law firm marketing. If I was injured and wanted a lawyer I would not retain them. They’re a lawsuit mill. They work on volume. The only thing law firm advertising proves is a law firm has a big advertising budget.

ContractTrue6613 t1_j2ppr1s wrote

Imagine being a transplant and being mad about that billboard. Like what’s wrong dude, it makes your Jawn Christmas ornament look bad?

What county do you live in? I grew up in Gloucester County Sourh Jersey, and summers and holidays in West Oak Lane. Finished high school in the Northeast at Cardinal Dougherty. I never saw "yous" but can understand how the word must have evolved to drop the e on the end. It could be a County/Region thing, so I'm curious where your home base is.

Fat_Head_Carl t1_j2psroc wrote

That's the thing about advertising... Successful ads get stuck in your head... And here you are, telling others about it, some of which would never see the actual sign.

throwitofftheboat t1_j2pxjm9 wrote

You’re using that word too liberally. They’re not a fucking genius it’s been staring us all in the face for years. It was only a matter of time before this shit went completely main stream. I know people across the county that use jawn all the time.

callalind t1_j2pzzz3 wrote

Gotta be honest, Morgan & Morgan has a genius marketing team. They figure out the nuances of every city they are in (which is probably like every city ever) and they know how to use it to their advantage. You can bet they are advertising in Pittsburgh with the same ad but saying "yinz."

Shitty personal injury law firms are aiming for the lowest common denominator. You are a 7/11 employee who slipped and fell in the stock room, or a poor person who got clipped by a septa Bus? What is the first law firm that comes to mind…that’s all they give a shit about. We got people remembering us when they think maybe I need a lawyer to sue some company/institution for $30k

Hoyarugby t1_j2q7tp5 wrote

Ambulance chaser law is a cutthroat business, there's a reason these guys spend on advertising and the high dollar firms don't. Annoying as they are, Morgan and Morgan's ad campaign has very likely given them a much higher name recognition than the other competing ambulance chasers, and did it for little extra cost - a billboard costs what a billboard costs, but a more effective ad is invaluable

As somebody who works tangentially in the ad business, the greatest (probably apocryphal) quote about advertisement comes from Philadelphia's own John Wanamaker. "Half of what I spend on advertisement is wasted. Problem is, I don't know which half"

I always see their TV spots late at night while at work. Also, if you have a car radio that shows RDS (station name, artist, etc), all of the Philly iHeart stations scroll "@ top dog law accident attorneys at topdoglaw.com" next to their station id's instead of the artist and song info. It's annoying as hell.

Someone I know works for him. Half of their budget is marketing, and most of their revenue comes through referral commissions. All they need people to do is call the number, and they will most likely never actually represent them. So, whatever gets the most attention is what the boards are going to say.

Also, to whoever said it below, yes, John Morgan loves that you hate the billboards.
