Sounds like you need a taller ladder.

probably, between me and my husband i dont trust us to get an even taller ladder and scale it safely. It's all strategically located so that we can't get the ladder at the best angle because there's a light fixture right underneath.

You have an 18 footer and the smoke detector is still outta reach? Whew. Nice ceiling.

I'd say you need a 20 footer

Are you certain that it takes a battery and isn't hardwired? Check your electrical panel for a tripped circuit.

If it's particularly old you may need to replace it. That'd be a call to your handyman--or landlord, if renting.

You can rent ladders and scaffolding from Lowe's or home Depot

Imagine having to construct a scaffold to reach a smoke detector…

I got depressed just thinking about it. Beginning to think a .22 is the tool for the job.
