Ive heard it gets weird though for the year when you move in a place and theres several cars already registered and they're like suck it up and register your first at #5.
Would extra suck if that's a grand or more.

I know this is tough for the PPA, but they could possibly use discretion and allow you to demonstrate that you just purchased the home/rented the apartment and invalidate the old pass. Probably there's a better solution I haven't thought of.

The PPA is not out for solutions, it's out for that cash. They're giving out 2-hour limit violations left and right in unmarked zones, dispute portal is broken, you either have to print out the photo evidence and mail it or go in person while you should be at work
Edit: I mean they'll just default to the 5th car for everything and you cant easily dispute it, profit line go up

When we moved in there was already a pass on our apartment but they were able to invalidate it. I think it was down to them needing to hear back from the previous pass owner though?

My house was the same way. I actually forgot that they could get an ok from the previous owners. I think it's a bad system to rely on the previous owner, since they have very low incentive to help. An executed lease or settlement paperwork for the house should be sufficient. Of course, it barely matters right now because the passes are priced below cost, anyhow.

I don’t see how small vs large government has anything to do with this. Parking space is public land, core role of government is to solve tragedy of the commons whether you’re a big government or small government guy.
Im generally small government and think that public parking is insanely underpriced and I don’t think there’s any contradiction there.

That's the nature of living in a city; there's not always room to store your private property on public space. Whether I like it or not, there's limited space. I own only a small piece of it; It's unreasonable for me to expect that I'll be able to use other pieces of it for free. I have a car, and I would be in favor of the parking permit price going up by at least 20 times. Fuck cars; our city would be better without them.

What if they raised the price of a parking permit so you couldn't afford it, but some of your neighbors could and then you have to sell your car and your wife has to commute via bicycle or bus and she feels unsafe, how does that make you feel?
It's like you have people here, paying taxes, they've been here and they've been incentivized to live like they're living with two cars or three cars or whatever. There's a social contract here and what you want is to break that social contract.

I would (and do) feel fine. Again: I'm actively advocating for the parking fees to be so high that a significant number of people decide it's not worth it and get rid of their cars. My wife and I and my kids can take a bus just fine like people do in urban areas all over the world.
I don't know about you (or anyone else who apparently just has to do whatever they're told), but I've been told since grade school that we can't keep driving the way we do because of climate change. Now we're seeing the effects of that in real-time but people keep making excuses for why they just won't try to cut back on driving.
If people were incentived to do this, they can be incentived to do differently. I'm not special; if I can figure out how to do without a car, everyone else can, too.
And one more time for the kids in the back: I hope they do raise the parking price so high I can't afford it. If a candidate comes up for office promising that, I'll vote for them. I support making driving harder and more expensive and transit cheaper, easier and better in literally every single circumstance.

My dad lives in a corner house. The guy down the street is a mechanic & has 3 kids & he & his wife & 2 cars each have a car plus he drives home whatever he’s working on & guess where he parks? My dad asked him once to not park at the corner so he could park there, my dad has a bad back , & the guy told him he would beat the shit out of him. I solved the problem by taking my dogs poop bags , I keep them in a bucket till the bag is filled to throw them out. Well somehow my dogs poop got under every door handle & all his windshield. Took a few days of doing it & he stopped. When he brought a truck home dog poop was over the back . He stopped

I’m sure that won’t go over well with his moron neighbor… the guy hasn’t threatened my dad lately since he saw my 6’3 275 lb all muscle son hanging around…. It’s really sad that he would even harass an 87 yr old man who literally can’t stand up straight but that’s the reality …. That’s why we all got great joy out of watching him go to his car or truck every morning & seeing where the dog shit was put overnight

it's been helpful on my block. unfortunately the other street at our intersection isn't permit, so naturally that's where the one family with NINE cars parks their fleet, and then on the other side, our amateur mechanic parks his 4-5 cars on any given week.

There’s a dude who lives near me who has yellow lines painted in front of his house and “garage” that he puts a bunch of obviously stolen cones in and parks his car and motorcycle there and occasionally there’s another car he lets park there too.
I wanna steal the cones so bad but my roommate kicked one over one time and he has like 10 security cameras outside and he came out screaming and called him the f slur so I’m a little scared of him.

Anyone living in a dense urban center where space is limited (particularly an issue in old cities like Philly) should have to pay out the ass to park their unused private property on land that could be used for other things. Free parking in the 'burbs is mostly fine, there's lots of space still

When I lived in Philly our block had permit parking. It's really amazing to me how few people were willing or able yo pay 30 bucks annually to park on our street. It had a lot of apartment buildings so there were plenty of people who loved there but opted instead for free parking around the neigh orhood.

My neighbor has 4 vehicles, 2 of them giant work vans. And they use them in tandem to block off spots for the others. It causes me untold rage everyday that parking on my street is messed up because of their bullshit. The PPA just shrugs and says “they have parking permits”.

One of the neighbors on our block came around with a petition to change to permit parking because of this issue. Lots of signatures but nothing happened. Lots of cars never move. Some from houses with multiple cars others for elderly residents that can no longer drive.

No excuses, the parking pass for multiple cars registered to the same address need to cost waaaayyyyyyy more (and the third and fourth more expensive still).. Four per household is unsustainable.
