It’s unreal that they dug this out and just left it. It’s been what, a week now? This whole neighborhood between 30th, girard, poplar, etc is a fucking nightmare right now

Turn left off this street and that’s my block. It’s been an absolute nightmare. Not only has this street been closed on and off (blocking the only entrance to our street), Girard is now closed at 30th for thru access. My side street has become a superhighway for Girard traffic and this work you see here has been ongoing for months. Since there is no way thru on Girard, the road closed sign has been tossed aside and cars have just been damaging this ongoing “work”.

This is added to the half-finished crosswalks and pedestrian lights at 31st & Girard at the ALDI entrance. There are THREE independent construction projects happening in the same 3 block radius. It’s madness.

Commuting around this area of Brewerytown has been truly awful for the past month plus and I don’t see it improving anytime soon.

This year, they did this every where. From south Philly to literally the center of center city, they dug shit up and left it there for like a month before finishing. Truly a terrible way of doing things. The Streets dept needs a very serious criminal investigation into its actions

This is representative of the overall workmanship and attitude towards finishing a job in Philly. I love this city but of all the major cities I’ve lived (3), it’s the only one that simply could care less about finishing a job and improving/restoring a neighborhood.

There is an overall attitude across the city that simply showing up at work earns the paycheck. Doing your job would be deemed “above and beyond”. Until there is more accountability in public works, amongst other things, it’s hard to envision the city taking a big step forward.

Urban speed bumps. Construction everywhere around there. Avoid driving through that area at all costs. Fairmount to the zoo/76 took 45 minutes. There’s a side alley close to there that was dug up then filled in but whoever did it really didn’t care. Like totally uneven and more than 5 mph and you’re losing you muffler. I thought it was temporary but it’s been like that a month +.

The inefficiency and poor craftsmanship is astounding.

Why remove top layers rough edges straight down one side and then section out on the other side only to go back and clean cut the edges for rough edges removal? Just rough clear the full width and then do the cleanup work. It'll fill faster, smooth easier and last longer.

Gotta work smarter, not harder and take some pride in your accomplishments.

But I guess efficiency would put OT into jeopardy right before the holidays...

They’ve been fucking up the streets in that immediate area for close to a year now. Poplar is a mess - cars are swerving left and right to avoid holes, and if you’re a cyclist, staying on the edge of the road is downright dangerous since it’s so messed up.

The sidewalks are messed up too, with the decent sidewalk concrete being replaced by ugly road material.

On top of that, when they do do street construction, they’ve stopped putting up “No Parking - construction from X date to X date” signs. So your car will randomly get courtesy towed now. Not a big deal - unless you get improperly towed from let’s say, having an all wheel drive car.

So they fuck up the streets, make you feel even more unsafe as a pedestrian, ruin the sidewalks, fuck up your car from random tows (which you’ll have no chance of fighting and winning against the tow companies), and there’s no clear path to how this is all gonna get fixed.

Nah, this is representative of three different contractors working on one project and having frigid weather hit early. When it warms into the 50s later this week, they can actually put down the asphalt on top of that concrete; otherwise, best they can do is some shitty cold patch that'll get obliterated three weeks into freeze/thaw season.

This is becoming a thing. Penn Dot is being sued for leaving a street dug up and it killed a motorcyclist despite many complaints and accidents already. I live outside of Philly and they leave roadwork incomplete for months at a time, and UGI digs up the street over and over again whenever they would like instead of doing any real repairs. They put up signs for no parking the whole week and they may or may not even appear. It’s way out of control and there is no care for the human beings interacting with their projects.

I’d say you are partly correct, however, there were almost 2 straight weeks a bit ago where it was 60+ degrees with no work being done. We all know November/December is coming and temps can dip so when these roads have been dug up for 6 months, this looks like god awful planning

Eh, little column A, little column B. Coordination could've definitely been better, but this is the same kind of thing that happened a year or two ago in East Falls - and this might've been a longer run of main that had to get replaced, really. Shit's complicated, stuff happens - not to say it isn't aggravating, but the day a major public works project goes exactly to plan is probably the day we finally get pigs airborne.

It’s crazy the incompetence surrounding their own web ticket system, I can’t imagine how day to day management is.

Thirty years ago, I spent a month in France as a summer exchange student. While I was there, they repaved the road in front of the house where I was staying. Crew and machines proceeded down the road at roughly a slow walk, paving as they went. An hour or so later, they came back the other way and did that lane. People went around them as they worked -- without even closing the road.

Never seen anything like it over here.

The contractor only gets paid for the restoration of the trench that was excavated. Stone and concrete base in the trench. Then they will cut back for asphalt so the overlap happens at the layer where water infiltration is most likely to occur. Ends with tar sealant between old and new asphalt. However, I'll be shocked and amazed if this can get completed in 2022 without a letter allowing the contractor to not be liable for warranty of the asphalt. It is too cold for asphalt plants to be open.

What can we actually do about this? The neighborhood has been torn to shit for months, with no sign of anything getting better before the snow. Cars are getting damaged left and right, there’s no safe way to bike, and the businesses are getting fewer customers. PGW, septa, and streets department are unforgivable on this one. Tearing streets to hell with zero fucks given. Not to mention starting at 6 AM, towing cars before their signs even say that parking is forbidden, and calling it a day at 1 PM.

JohnnyG789 t1_ix93wmf wrote

I agree with all of the above statements and the city should do something to correct asap. Has this been the local news tv stations? Maybe it'll get some traction if it's reported there.

On a lighter note- It could be is the city is digging to look for the Upside Down.

For those who don't watch Stranger Things:

The Upside Down is an alternate dimension that mirrors our world — or at least our world if it was a toxic hellscape overrun with creepy, moving vines, filled with murderous creatures linked together in a hive mind system, and is constantly experiencing electrical storms.

100% agree. Terrible time to replace asphalt right now due to cold temps. Asphalt plants open during the day only so contractors cant get any at night when the do some of their work. The concrete they put in is supposed to be to the top of the trench so they can mill it down when they come back with the top coat of asphalt.

The trench this contractor dug in OP's image is probably for water or gas. The contractor is likely responsible to mill the lane they worked thru and either ran out of time or money.

3

Trailmix88 t1_ixan8eu wrote

It's prob water and very, very likely only paid to restore the trench (no milling will be done in this case). Gas is usually a thinner trench (more shallow depth requirements) and sewer usually requires full width restoration. They will do cut backs and hope for temps above 50 to wrap it up before asphalt plants close for the season.

Anyone see any markings on the barrels as to who did the work? PCI? Nello? Meco? CCI?

Agreed. My car is fucked from these roads, I've been knocked off my bike because they left a 1ft deep hole across the entire road and bike lane, and it was deeper than it looked. On top of this, I ride in the bike lanes and there's randomly piles of cement almost 2x-3x higher than a speed bump across the bike lanes from times that they had to dig into the ground, and decided to just put a pile of cement on it to "fix" it. they don't even flatten it

Just proves that more Philly changes, the more it wants to remain the same.
