Unless you have experience with city bike riding I would say no. I ride often and still find it daunting. You can however have a really pleasant bike ride on Kelly Drive along the river. There are several Indego and private rental stations just behind the art museum that would be great. Also, you seem to already realize this, but that is not Philadelphia in the stock photo. We dont have any pedestrian shopping streets like that.

A lot of Philadelphians don't own cars and use bikes as their only mode of transportation. The city is also very walkable, and public transit is frequent and reliable most of the time.

Your hotel is in a very bike accessible area.

Sure, it’s accessible. That has nothing to do with the behavior of drivers, however.

Depends on what you mean by biking. If you are planning to put on rainbow colored spandex and do a 100km race through the streets, Philly kind of sucks for cycling.

If you just want to cruise around leisurely to see the city and use the bike as a sort of transportation and enjoy yourself, Philly is fantastic for cycling. I'm a daily bike commuter in NYC and to me Philly is so much better. The roads are narrower so the cars go slower. Philly is a fantastic city to explore by bike, IMHO the best city for bike adventures in the USA.

You don't have to worry about getting run over by a psycho because traffic is so bad cars don't have a chance to go that fast. Just watch out for cars like when you were 10

Philly has a bike share, some bike lanes and MLK is closed to traffic on weekends. The SRT can take you to Valley Forge and beyond. Plenty of biking

Stick to streets with dedicated lanes, like Pine, Spruce, 22nd, etc. Ride the Schuykill River Trail for sure. Youll be fine

I’d avoid it since you’re not familiar with the city, and much less so our drivers.

I generally feel safe riding my bike in Philly, though I try to stick to the bike lanes as much as possible. Not sure I’d do it with kids unless you’re sticking to one of the river trails. Our bike share system, Indego, is so-so. I’ve had several trips where the rack wouldn’t acknowledge I’d locked my bike so I had to waste time chatting with support. The bikes are pretty heavy (thought not as bad as Baltimore’s), and unlike in some systems (like NYC) you have to pay extra for a pedal-assisted bike.

Thank you for your input everyone! Forewarned I will figure out how to ride around a little- maybe. I have kids though so it seems like it might be too dicey. Too bad You can’t take safe biking for granted in America- although you wouldn’t know that from stock photography.

Oh fuck no do not let your little kids bike here. Philly is bikeable, but you need to be a defensive cyclist

There’s no way I’d let my kids ride bikes in downtown Philly. 😂.

Children under 12 can ride on the sidewalk in Philly.

They’re going to be in Center City though. I wouldn’t put a kid on a bike on the sidewalk or the street in Center City. Kids are dumb, and there’s just way too much going on there.

Just stay on the sidewalks and you'll be OK.
