THANK YOU they sounded so eerie from Manayunk, I thought it was thunder from the outer parts of Ian about to hit us

Yes, but why though

My friend in Mt Airy texted me in South Philly asking if the world was ending. Wild it was that loud all the way up there! Air must be extra dense from the incoming rain and carrying sound extra well.

How the hell are they heard all over the city what are they doing

But… why?

That is so weird. I live in point breeze now as of the summer, but before that I lived right by the river… it sounded louder here in point breeze than it ever did when I was right next to them! I guess the clouds and rain must have been making the sound echo more than usual? I guess? that was fucking wild.

Cooper Hospital is having an event with fireworks at the end.

Clouds are lower than normal, so yeah. Creates a crazy sound box

Clouds, because of the storm and the pressure system are denser and lower than usual. So sound is compressed and not diffusing upwards.

If people are interested, because of tropical weather clouds are different than normal. So... https://www.tampaairport.com/effects-weather-noise#:~:text=For%20example%2C%20during%20Tampa's%20afternoon,noise%20as%20does%20cloud%20cover.

is it just me or do these fireworks look really fucking cool? i think fireworks are boring. but these have a dmt-like random fractal pattern. idk if the window and/or phone are doing something with the light, but whatever it looks pretty cool in the picture at least.

Eerie, yes! Knew it wasn’t thunder, sounded like multiple explosions. Wish the fireworks had been visible from Manayunk.
TimeFourChanges t1_iqly5h4 wrote
I'm in Manayunk too - and it was happening right when my adorable, lil 7 year old daughter ripped a HUGE FART. When I asked if she thought that was thunder, she thought I was referring to her fart - and just cracked up.

Oh, ok. I was wondering. I heard them in south Philly…
