Idk what’s gotten into the PPA recently, but they’re kind of crushing it

I know this will be an unpopular take and people hate them, but I’ve got to give them props: they’ve been giving out tickets galore around my neighborhood recently and seem like the one like civic management organization (for lack of a better term) that at least seems like it’s trying doing it’s job. And today I actually saw someone park in a bus zone, read the sign as they were walking away from their car, and move. So keep ‘em coming, PPA

Definitely appreciate their increased push on enforcing cars with missing or blocked plates - I've noticed it make a clear impact in my neighborhood. I'll take whatever progress we can get!

I think the PPA use to be the ones in charge of airport parking and enforcement at the parking garage and employee lot. They no longer have that contract and so maybe it’s forced them to recalibrate and get back to enforcing more in the city since they can’t depend on the airport money anymore- anybody feel free to correct me if I’m wrong

I live in West Philly, and on my 2 mile commute to Penn, I regularly pass 10+ double parked cars. Often they are parked in front of massive, empty spots. It's fucking bullshit.

I suspect (though can't back it up) that most of these people are working. Whether they are ride share drivers or delivery drivers. And I'm sure they are incentivized by the shitty corporations that subcontracted them to go as fast as humanly possible. Which is bullshit. But some of them are definitely just regular lazy assholes who are pathologically self centered.

Are you that person (not you, OP, just in general)? Can I ask you why you believe that YOU are so special that you don’t have to look for parking, but everyone else does? Do you think your convenience outweighs the traffic safety of all the drivers, bikers, and pedestrians on Broad street?

I hate circling for parking too. Especially if I’m “just running in real quick”. My real quick though is at least a minute and in that minute several accidents could have happened. So, no, it’s not “just a sec”.

This has always been a problem in Philly, but in the last few years, it has gotten to the point where Broad street is becoming more of a parking lot than a street.

Why? Have people gotten more selfish, less patient since Covid? And why? I understand that we spent a good portion of those years in lock down only really having to answer to ourselves, but is it that easy to undo basic consideration for others that was once expected from your fellow human? Perhaps they’ve always been that way and are learning that they can get away with it with impunity. Idk. Thanks for letting me vent.

I frequently travel between center city and the stadium on Broad and it has gotten unbelievably worse, like I expect the lane closest to the sidewalk/parked cars is now just reserved for temporary parking.

I think they’re organized and doing their job because they make hella money. Like unbelievable amounts. And listen. It’s the only way to get cars to not be where they should not be, short of citizens deadlifting an axle and carrying them somewhere else.

It’s the bullshit that happens that we hate them for. Like my partner getting 3 tickets 3 days in a row for parking on Carpenter by the sprouts, taking it to the PPA office to refute, and them saying they couldn’t understand the sign either. Two hours of his life he will never get back.

My neighbor would leave his car double parked all day long, one day I had enough when my kids were almost hit by a school bus going around his van. I called the police, they called me back a while later and the car was still there so they came out. They knocked on his door and he came out in his underwear, the cop screamed at him and he has never double parked ever again. It was an every day thing here for a long time.

They've been cracking down on this in Manayunk recently and it's glorious. One guy even complained on our FB group that he got ticketed for parking on the sidewalk because he "didn't know it was illegal" and he "wasn't blocking the road." Bruh you were blocking the sidewalk which is [shocker] NOT FOR CARS.

Their process is overly bureaucratic and almost no one at the PPA office understands it or cares to take the time to listen to people until you get upset from being pushed to some other line that isn't even correct to have your situation addressed....sorry, I too had lost time from the PPA and clearly still bitter about it, lol.

I yelled at a cop the other day because he damn near hit me when I was crossing the street in a crosswalk because he pulled in front of the curb cut I was about to use to get out of the fucking crosswalk. Of course "normal" people are going to do it and fuck over disabled people and parents with strollers if cops are doing it (and almost taking out legal pedestrians in the process).

This happened to me the other day, some dude left their car double parked into a driving lane on Manayunk Ave (basically a narrow 2 lane road with street parking). Thankfully some kind septa bus driver coming up opposite let me get around em in the opposite lane, but it's super sketchy.

It seems like they go in waves in my neighborhood. They’ll be really on it for a couple weeks and then totally gone for a couple weeks. They actually just towed my partners car on a non-permitted street for seemingly no reason so, while I appreciate your sentiment, I cannot say I am feeling it as well.

I'm also in West and the volume of people who just stop in the street when there are a plethora of open spots is staggering. It's just lazy and selfish. I used to honk, until recently a woman I honked at for being double parked next to an open spot followed me and threatened me. No one is doing anything about it.

Too often the issue is the institution, not the job. Camden county replaced their entire police department and is faring much better.

Few people say seriously - no cops ever -

many people say 'the institution of the phila police department is un-recoverable'

Same with the PPA. It's not that having reasonable parking restrictions is bad, it's that the PPA itself is a criminal organization.

PPA has a direct number you can call but I had to get it from 311. If you call them direct (particularly during weekday hours but there is someone there all the time) they can even radio the team working your neighborhood and let them know (especially if it's an ongoing thing, those neighborhood crews are regulars and remember problem areas).

I’m not sure. I work at the airport and the employee parking switched last year to a new company and we had to reapply for our badges and everything. I think they also run parking at the garage - it’s some kinda company that is national and focuses on running airport parking

Considering Fishtown is one gigantic construction project right now, between the trucks blocking crosswalks and the workers blocking/tearing up sidewalks (often simultaneously on both sides of the street!) sometimes it feels like babywearing is so much less of a hassle, not to mention safer... but then you're still walking in the middle of the fucking street... Pisses me off every day.

I've been seriously considering making a few social media accounts to put the PPD on blast and just link photos of illegally parked Philly police.

They do it near me all the time - they park in the crosswalks at a restaurant nearby, then waddle their fat asses inside and enjoy a sit-down meal.

Fuck anyone who needs to use the crosswalk in the meantime, and god help anyone in a wheel chair or with a stroller.

Personally, when I hear “lawlessness” I don’t take it to mean that it’s thunder dome all over.

I think if it more in the sense of “are laws being enforced?”

And, like, sure it’s not like no laws are being enforced but enforcement is pretty darn minimal.

I live here, I go about my day, and I’m not particularly concerned about my personal safety, but are the cops gonna do anything to help my friend whose car got stolen? Nope. How about anything about the blatant drug dealing that’s been happening on the corner for years? Also nope. The smoking and drug use on the El? Nope. Has the person who car jacked my neighbor been caught? Nope. Have they arrested anyone for a majority of the homicides? Nope.

So like, do I expect to get shot or robbed or whatever when I take my family out for dinner tonight on a patio?

No, not really. It’s not non-stop murder out there (although matching the homicide rate if Cartagena, Colombia isn’t really a source of civic pride either.)

But…we all know that a ton of laws are not being enforced, and I don’t think “lawlessness” is that terribly of a word choice to express this situation of widespread non-enforcement of laws, even if it’s not total chaos and mayhem out on the streets.
