I think the nimbys would probably have a heart attack if they built the Burj Khalifa there

It would hopefully bring in some tourists

True but never the less great for the area and MFL

Some high rise buildings in U City would really make our skyline incredible. One can dream…

I get so fucking mad thinking about how one of the first things Kenney did after getting elected was waste all that money and effort converting this building, so that the city would be forced to hand Bart Blatstein a massive check to rent the Inquirer building.
I knew right then and there Kenney was not going to be a good mayor for the city, and he only got worse from there.
This development is nice, but this should have been the new PPD headquarters.

I think a lot of the people complaining about the small size of this don’t live in the neighborhood.
Not because NIMBY, but because this is a huge building for the area. I doubt there’s a single 10 story building anywhere west of this. And I can’t think of anything near This size for about 6 blocks east, and that’s all student housing.
Which this decidedly is not.
Chimpskibot t1_j8uinrn wrote
Garden Court is west of this by one or two blocks and is 12 stories and PHA towers at 44th street are 2 blocks away and are 18 stories.
AdministrationNo9238 t1_j8uiwgr wrote
Well sheet. Like usual, I’m wrong.
Still, it’s big for the area.
18 stories and multiple 7 story building. Thats a lot of house.
I thought the PHA houses were getting torn down.
Chimpskibot t1_j8ukjim wrote
Its only Big because of Zoning Overlays and lack of investment in West. Garden Court is also getting a 7 story addition above its garage. The PHA towers will be redeveloped and rented as mixed-income project as they should be. https://whyy.org/articles/philadelphia-housing-authority-westpark-complex-construction-closer-to-starting/ https://www.westphillylocal.com/2022/06/10/construction-of-220-unit-addition-to-garden-court-plaza-begins/

Sure, it’s only big for those reasons.
But it is big.

Your point?
The area on that side of market is largely undeveloped. The area to the south and a few blocks north is like 98% townhouses.
It's also right next to the El, and frankly that's a terrible place to live due to the noise. Market itself is sketchy around there and west. We should be happy there's a developer dumb enough to think people will pay for luxury apartments out there.

I don’t understand why people are complaining about its size due to all the factors you mention.
If it was center city, sure. But, all the factors you mention.

Looks like every other too-short piece of shit popping up across the city like a wart

18 sorties is pretty huge for that part of town.
Sweetgirl_j t1_j8undzz wrote
I was surprised by that too.
From the article,
“…the property sits within a Transit Oriented Development (TOD) overlay, which allows for additional density and height due to proximity to public transit.”
AdministrationNo9238 t1_j8v1ne3 wrote
Yeah, I saw that. And some 7 story buildings on the same lot. That’s insane for this part of town.

Maybe, but it also creates a permanent structure that will never be able to really be expanded upon. It loses its potential energy, so to speak.
hdhcnsnd t1_j8u32h0 wrote
I don’t think that’s true. There is still so much infilling to be done in Philadelphia (look at how many parking lots we have across the city).
While we would all love to see every new build being a super-tall, I think we need to fill in those low density gaps first.
Things go more vertical when there’s less horizontal space. There’s still a lot of horizontal space here.

Has there been a bigger residential development outside of center city in the past 20 years?

Should be 180 stories but I'll take it
