They don't work for Penn. Their issues are with the contractor they actually work for. They can certainly apply directly to Penn for a job in food service.

My company also made this argument before when it came to our facilities staff, but I don't buy it. Why is a company as deep pocketed as Penn not contracting out to places with better standards? Or building in wage standards into their service agreement?

Speaking from experience, it’s MUCH easier to get hired by a contract company at Penn than to actually get hired by the university, although having a good track record as a contract employee can help you transition to a Penn job if you network. It’s kinda fucked but Penn is all about who you know. Not to mention, contract employees still have “Penn expectations” to keep up with, despite their often lower pay grade.

That's an ever growing part of the workforce that nobody touches on.

So much of the labor market, even skilled, is just contractors and "consultants." The parent org gets to keep toting their benefits plan for the special few, meanwhile the majority of people you see or interact with have zero PTO and a $6500 healthcare deductible.

Contracting needs to be reigned in, but America is an anti-worker nation at heart.

yeah fuck those workers. sure, penn has billions in their endowment fund, and they get extremely preferential treatment from the city, but lets encourage them to hire contractors who treat their workers like shit.

There are a lot of other people who need to be treated better by the penn Hillel as well .. especially when it comes to freedom of speech and ability to have an open and safe discussion of boycotts divestment and sanctions.

are you actually confused as to why jews, who overwhelmingly support israel, arent interested in hearing that?

Dont think it matters whether they are “interested” in hearing it. Issue is the effort to silence a legitimate boycott effort and associated speech issues
