their pizza is fine but it's not like you can't get good pizza at a million places that don't have insanely stupid ordering systems

lordredsnake t1_j9iulb9 wrote

They have a normal ordering system now. That shit was obnoxious though. The pizza is still overrated. Drizzling Mike's hot honey on a pizza does not elevate it to greatness.

Where’s your favorite place? Mine is Famous Pete’s, but anytime someone brings it up I like to ask. I have yet to try Pizza Brain or Pizza Jawn.

I know, the crust is so amazing. It’s kinda in the Goldilocks zone between a pan pizza and a thin NYC style, so it’s the best of both worlds.

damn I'm gonna have to try them next time I order pizza then, thanks for the recommendation

Honestly, I prefer Twisted Ginger’s just a little bit up the hill.

Granted, I’m more partial to thin crust. Pizza Jawn is pretty damn good. It’s ordering there is such a stupid ass nightmare I almost never bother.

13

ThaddyG t1_j9gqr9f wrote

I've had it a few times and it seems like it's probably pretty good for what it is, I just don't really like that super thick Detroit style or whatever it is.

9

lordredsnake t1_j9iutl8 wrote

They have regular pies, grandma pies with a denser dough with sesame seeds, and Detroit style.

I would love their grandma style if they distributed the cheese better and used a regular tomato sauce. As it is, the middle slices are basically tomato pie, and sometimes the outer slices are 90% dough. And the sauce is really acidic.

lordredsnake t1_j9iv4pa wrote

I felt embarrassed the couple years as a kid in the 90s when I tried to use jawn in my lexicon. It was forced then, and I was a city kid. It's really forced now when transplants from Colorado are throwing it around.

10

project199x t1_j9i44lz wrote

People have been saying jawn since the dawn of time in urban communities. So "jawn" is not dead.

But the people who are using it suburban white folk are forcing and using the term incorrectly where it's just becoming cringe!

LIKE YOU CANT USE A NOUN WITH A FUCKIN NOUN. TF IS A BAR JAWN AND A PIZZA JAWN?! FFS!!

7

8_Foot_Vertical_Leap t1_j9jhrwu wrote

You definitely can use a noun with a noun. Pizza place. Coffee shop. Soda bar. It's pretty common with restaurants and such. The problem here is that "jawn" essentially means "thing". So "pizza jawn" is fine, because jawn is replacing "place". But "bar jawn" doesn't work because no one in history has ever said "bar thing" or "bar place". "Bar" is always used as the noun being described, never the other way around.

15

project199x t1_j9k6wkm wrote

I mean in the sense of using the word jawn. Nobody uses jawn like that. And I mean no one that I know who uses it like that. It's just jawn. Like "hand me that jawn right there" or "u see that jawn" .. I have never heard anyone say "I'm going to the Rita's jawn"... "I'm going to a pizza jawn", imma "temple jawn" it doesn't even make sense. It's more like "I'm putting these jawns on a pizza", "hand me that jawn over there" I get what ur saying in proper English terms but this is a slang term.. people are just misusing it, where it's just becoming beyond cringe. Once the masses get a hold of things that have been around since my parents were little and probably before that, they end up ruining the shit.

ALSO ANYONE NATIVE FROM PHILLY DOES NOT CALL THEMSELVES A "JAWN" TF?

I’m in the northeast, port Richmond, fishtown, south Philly. Never hear it unless it’s, like I said, some wanna be.

3

sandwichpepe t1_j9i2412 wrote

that might be why, jawn is largely a black philadelphian thing

5

harbison215 t1_j9i2de0 wrote

Well, in my experience it’s not the white Philadelphians who are using it, maybe the transplants pick it up but I don’t have many friends that came from outside of philly. For what it’s worth, I listen to sports talk radio just about everyday and I don’t recall many of the host or callers ever using it, no matter white or black, unless they are specifically talking about the word itself.

2

starboardbaby t1_j9i5iit wrote

I’m born and raised in Philly, still live here and go to Temple, and I did hear jawn organically used among (white) native Philadelphians growing up. I was in high school when jawn started really being co-opted by wannabes/transplants/businesses so it stopped being cool with natives then. When my parents were kids in Philly growing up they used jawn but not as frequently as you’d think

2

starboardbaby t1_j9i5pdp wrote

This is among white people from South Philly/Roxborough primarily btw

1

harbison215 t1_j9i5vik wrote

I was born and raised in philly in 1983, originally juniata Frankford and then far northeast. Spent a lot of time in other neighborhoods. The word obviously existed and still exists in the Philadelphia lexicon, but it certainly isn’t used enough in any real sense to be considered some gem of local vocabulary. It’s hardly used seriously outside of the deep inner city. That’s why someone using it in this way has most of the responses here as “cringe.”

You were born and raised here, so you recognize how it’s use has become somewhat unorganic, especially in this context.

1

starboardbaby t1_j9igni9 wrote

Yeah even kids I know at Temple that aren’t from this area at all use it because it’s plastered everywhere and they think it’s “Philly slang”. Definitely more inorganic now among inner city people esp in the past few years.

famouspieceofshit t1_j9i2f6x wrote

You said nobody from philly says it should have just said the neighborhoods eagles season ticket holder here and you hear that shit from the tailgate to the last whistle of the game …… word is alive and well

1

harbison215 t1_j9i38ql wrote

I rarely hear it used seriously. I don’t see it used seriously on Facebook, I don’t hear it used seriously on WIP sports talk radio and that would come from a wide range of callers from all different parts of the city. It’s def a philly word, it always has been. I just don’t really believe anyone from here would consider it a word to seriously name their business after. I mean someone has so what do I know?

Dude I’ve given up on it. I’ve just accepted it’s not a thing here. Closest I found is this place in manayunk called Pizzeria l’angolo. Their plain slice is sort of close, as long as you go in knowing it’s not going to the be the same.
