I feel like you guys must get this a lot, but hear me out: my oncologist mentioned that my job laying me off because I wasn't recovering from chemo/radiation fast enough was likely a silver lining – the job was nonstop high-stress and the toxic workplace amplified it, and making changes that keep my cortisol chilled out can help decrease my chances of recurrence. Even when you have a job w/ health insurance, cancer is expensive, and when my source of income got yanked away I went through my savings and got numb to using my credit card. Before this I've never had more than 1k on it before, and always paid it off each month. I grew up poor so debt super scares me – I worked two PT jobs on top of my FT job after college so I could pay off my loans in 5 years. But I digress-

I'm interviewing for jobs and have a good feeling about a few of the ones I have in the next week, but I think about this credit card debt non-stop – which makes me think about getting cancer again, which freaks me out, and the spiral takes hold. I'm meditating and job searching and trying to do online classes but really I'm fucking freaking out here. My credit went from Excellent to Fair last week and I had a panic attack so bad I threw up. I know, logically, that this is solvable, that "now is just right now" and I'll get back on my feet soon, but holy shit. So with that context in mind, and with the economy possibly about to go into a recession, does that change any opinions about withdrawing my 401k to pay off the credit card?

Thanks in advance for being kind, it's been a rough year.

So you were still working while getting treatment? Were you not eligible for FMLA? I'm trying to figure out if they laid you off while you were under medical care. Right now, you can sign up for unemployment. Also, look into financial aid from your health provider.

I didn't know about FMLA, I worked through all of treatment. I feel so stupid. I'm solo and it was all so overwhelming.

Too bad. At this point, I would continue to make the minimum payment on your credit card each month until you can find a new job and then worry about paying it off. Your credit score will increase once it's under 30% of the credit limit. Use the funds you have to take care of your basic needs for now.
