This is just stupid. The whole point of living in New York is that you can be as drunk as you want because you don’t have to drive. Everybody knows this. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Sounds like they’re turning the inability to obtain a liquor license into a trend to still make some profit.

People try this every handful of years in cities big and small and almost never works out, mostly for business reasons.

Anyways, Im actually surpised on the lack of non-alcoholic beverages in most bars. Anywhere in the west, even small bars usually offer a handful of stuff like kombucha, teas, or specialty soda and more, even on tap. NYC its very minimal.

At the least ones referenced in this story it’s not the case

One is a pop up concept specifically to be non alcoholic. Hekate is just a coffee shop, the owners also own a bar across the street.

P0stNutClarity t1_ixo287d wrote

Seriously this is stupid lmao they know when people drink they get frivolous with spending. They’d 10000% prefer a liquor license. I’m definitely not ordering multiple rounds of “mockshots”

The_CerealDefense t1_ixo2rzf wrote

I’m not sure if the bar/social life aspect would work in those cultures. Especially mixing men and women. And dating isn’t as straightforward and such. I’m not sure how many locals would be open to “bar culture”. Even in many counties that are fine with alcohol, bar culture can be almost nonexistent or very different than the west.

Just so you know. Statistics and research show that Asian populations in the US are overwhelmingly lower rates of drinking than other ethnicities and are at the bottom for alcohol consumption. So when they say Asian populations in the US don’t drink as much, that is true.

Here’s just a few studies

I don’t know why the hostility. I’ve never been a drinker and I’m so stoked bars and restaurants are finally including non alcoholic options. It always seems so stupid to me not to at least think of pregnant women or designated drivers at the very least.

The hostility towards the concept of people wanting to go out without getting drunk is so bizarre to me.

I know people who have unhealthy relationships with alcohol, and it’s been really refreshing over the years to be able to go to places that offer mocktails so that they can still socialize without feeling too out of place.

Nothing about this trend is aimed at replacing bars that serve alcohol or guilting people who want to get drunk. It’s literally just providing people who don’t drink with more options.

I’ve noticed a lot of people who are insecure about their own relationship with alcohol project their issues onto people who don’t want to/can’t drink, and it’s super irksome to see that borne out here in these comments. Live and let live.

As someone who used to go to bars all the time and enjoyed trying cocktails but doesn’t drink anymore - this is awesome. I can understand that people think it’s a passing trend and not seeing the point, I used to feel the same way. But, kind of wish people would be a little less cynical of something like this. Being dry all the time can feel like you’re missing out, so even silly seeming ways to help people feel part of something should be applauded.

Gozillasbday t1_ixpwp5z wrote

I understand people wanting sober options and it's good to have them. However I'm not sure this will work out the same as alcohol at bars. Are you going to go somewhere and have 4-6 juices for $10+ each in one night? Are you going to get a a top shelf juice that costs extra? Juice bottle service for the table?

11

FormerKarmaKing t1_ixq28rk wrote

Yup. Alcohol is hard to replace as a product bc having one makes you want another. Like even people doing injectable opioids don’t do one after another after another. Not saying that to be funny, but the average bar tab relative to the bar’s rent is really hard to replace, whether it’s marijuana, non-alcoholic, whatever.

6

Babhadfad12 t1_ixq3av0 wrote

Oops, seems like CA allows it (but many cities in CA do not), and WA/OR do not allow cannabis lounges.

Either way, I assume pushback for “public consumption” if only to grease more political wheels, considering how long and hard fought cannabis stores were.

The dudes for which drinking alcohol is 75% of their personality are probably the same (or friends with) the ones for which eating meat is their biggest personality trait. Bonus point if they like to shit on vegans, or consider that buying a plastic wrapped steak in a supermarket fridge makes them manly. Similar phenomenon with drinks.

I don’t get why everyone in the comments is so offended by this. If you don’t like it, don’t go. It’s nice to have something social to do that doesn’t revolve around drinking in NYC. As someone who doesn’t drink anymore for no other reason than it just wasn’t serving me, it’s nice to go somewhere with my husband after dinner or a movie.

You don’t have to understand everything.

EN96 t1_ixqjem5 wrote

If you like Aperol, Wilfred’s is a good alternative. My husband likes Kentucky 74 and Free Spirits bourbon. The non-alcoholic wines are great too—they’re real wine that’s been dealcoholized.

We need weed bars with chill out lounge where people sit around and enjoy some music, talk. Chillout soundproof spaces. Game area for physical games to play. Of course food and drinks. Naked waitresses would be a big plus too. City needs to put the hammer down in favor of sex work, nudity.

Also nyc needs a new avenue for revenue. Wall street already expressed how it wants to move away. So nyc has to build vegas style businesses (better than vegas) to survive. No other way around it.

If I didn't drink, I'd rather do an activity for nightlife that isn't trying to be the bar scene. It's trying too hard to be something it's not. It's sort of like how impossible burgers tries to be real hamburgers.

Who on earth is going to be a similar price for a mix of juices and soda as a cocktail? At least it makes a little more sense why alcohol costs more (liquor license, tax on booze, liability the bar has).

If I don't drink, I don't want to sit around at a non-alcoholic bar to pretend I'm drinking. Like I said, I rather do something not centered around drinking (i.e. Jazz/music lounge, late night museum, board game cafe, etc.)

I have high hopes! :-)

I think it gets a little dicey for native Emirati Muslims (like they're technically not supposed to drink but it's not entirely enforced), but the country's population is 89% expats. Which includes a lot of people (mostly Indians, Pakistanis, Filipinos, etc but also Brits, Americans, Africans, Canadians, etc) who were born and raised there.

People upthread started shitting on vegans just a couple hours after you posted, lol.

As a non-evangelizing teetotal pescetarian who just wants to be able to have options when I go out, well... insecure, hostile people can go enjoy their coc au vin (or their beers and ribs, idc) and I will enjoy my plant-based and non-alcoholic options, and so long as they leave me alone to my own choices we won't have a problem.

But it's still funny when they start vomiting up their own insecurities whenever they are confronted with the concept of other people making different personal choices.

Sober vegan here. Comments like yours illustrate just how much unhealthy behavior is normalized, while simultaneously demonizing people trying to better themselves. Sober people are not obnoxious, we're left out. Vegans are not obnoxious, we're laughed at. The smallest pip-squeak of "any NA drinks?" or "what are your vegan options?" are perceived by people like you as "antics," when really we're not doing shit but chilling. Meanwhile, Mr Meat-sweats in the corner is on his 10?th beer, loud, incomprehensible, and acting a fool. Tell me again, who's the obnoxious ones? I understand you may be struggling with your unhealthy decisions. But dont come after me. I too once felt guilty about my alcohol and animal consumption. I suspect you may be in the same boat.

Ah, yes. Let's all just ignore the risks of drinking. Over 100,000 people die from alcohol in the US every year. Some of us dont want to be part of that statistic. Many of my friends and family, and even myself have been negatively affected by a destructive substance that is shoved in our faces at every opportunity. But that's besides the point. I dont even want to argue if drinking is good or not, cause you already know the answer. Lets talk about the article. It's not telling you to change your life, just mentions a new trend, and reveals a couple new interesting spots. Meanwhile, there's like a thousands normal bars. These new spots are refreshing and low key. They're literally just an alternative option in a sea of liquor. Why are you triggered? Enlighten yourself.
