No, they painted a curb extension/pedestrian zone but haven't put in the flex-posts or the truffle paint yet.

Yeah the crews that put down white paint are completely different than the crews that put down all the other stuff. Their schedules aren't perfectly aligned so there's usually a short gap in completing the work.

Here's an example of the finished product.

Also this thread is a perfect example of people thinking they're smarter than they actually are.

I wish NYC also blocked cars from parking in corners

It's also the worst place on planet earth to own a car, and it's hard to have pedestrian deaths with an average driving speed of 3.8mph. Not arguing for which side is worth it, but I can say it's not without a cost. Before the anti-car crew jumps down my throat, I don't own a car thank you.

When I moved back to Brooklyn for a few months after having moved to San Diego, I parked my car in Fort Hamilton (I was a military dependent) and left it there until I drove back to San Diego.

I didn’t have a driver’s license until I was 26, and I was so used to taking public transportation and walking in the city that I just went right back to that.

Someone might not get killed by getting hit by a car at low speed, but no one wants to get hit by a car, even if it’s going slowly. That shit would hurt.

I appreciate that, and like I said I'm not arguing for which is right (though I was down voted as if I was)... Hoboken is 1.97 square miles and is miserable to own a car, NYC is 302 square miles, but people think anything they do that works is something we should take on. Hoboken has a population of 59,000 people, NYC has 8.5M. Pretty much the same, ah yes you guys have found the secret. I'm the dumb one. Or this stat just fits your agenda. Reddit is so dumb

I love how Crescent Street is the perfect example of all driving situations, good and bad.

I just wish they'd put the big concrete barriers back in -- seeing all those cars stuck on top of them always made my day.

In a real city, we'd pour concrete for the island rather than just painting.

Bingo. This happened with the curb extension outside my building too and eventually they got around to putting in the stuff to make clear that the box is for pedestrians. That said, the crosswalk should've made it obvious and the red pickup driver is being a massive tool.

I think at this point, most people are becoming cops for self protection. In NYC I notice people who have no business being a cop.

This is like when you're unpacking a box and you're only halfway done when your cat decides it's the perfect place for her to sit. And your cat is a big red pickup truck.

Yes. It's illegal for a driver to cross a double white line. Obviously drivers don't care about the law and will park anywhere they can physically get to, but this is clearly not a legal parking space.

huebomont t1_ivz8gsr wrote

That said, they did in effect paint a parking spot. It's crazy that there can be weeks-long gaps between milling, paving, painting lines, painting colors, and adding in flex posts and stuff. Absolutely terrible project management and they don't care to improve.

ChipsAndLime t1_ivzgeen wrote

You’re right about the poor project management, but for context, the DOT is severely understaffed, partly due to the return to office mandate that made many employees quit.

So it’s amazing that they get anything done at all these days.

huebomont t1_iw19gtw wrote

they didn’t do this well when they were well staffed

Its been like this for weeks now. They’ve got to be able to better coordinate the teams to finish this off.

These are pedestrian zones? I see a bunch of them along 5th Ave in Brooklyn and every one of them is a de facto parking spot.

v_rose23 t1_ivzbj7y wrote

So that’s what that is!!!! There’s on at the intersection of worth and church streets and this gray car parks in the middle of the crosswalk half the time

nicwolff OP t1_iw1gs1s wrote

I'm sure you're right – but it's been like this for weeks and there are cars parked there every single day. There's one there right now. And they don't get ticketed. So... it's a parking spot.
