New Yorker contributors are usually just freelance and this guy specifically is a freelance comedy writer who's in his 30's. I doubt he's anything close to wealthy, freelance journalism doesn't pay that much. So yeah he probably takes the subway and does so late at night as well.

Imagine finding comedy in "subway safety - LOL!!!!" Monstrous. The person who wrote this article should have to explain to Michelle Go's family exactly what they found so hilarious about the complex problem of increasing subway safety.

Visited NYC last month and took the subway a lot in the week I was there. Took the subway in Manhattan at all hours, even alone at 2AM, always felt safe, granted I am a white male in his 30s.
