If you want to move here you can. If you're set on it, then there it is. You're the only one stopping you from moving. Millions of bright eyed people from around the world have dreamed of moving to NYC or LA or Paris, the lights, the culture, everything. You can too.
Don't worry about "expectations" other than like most big cities, NYC is expensive, so expect it to be expensive. NYers tend to complain about 1 major thing, the price. Next would be how the Knicks could be good, but they never are, god dammnit.
The best place to begin is deciding if you want to move or not. Take it out of the theoretical.

Do it. It rules. Get a job in a restaurant and find a room in an apartment share and meet all sorts of arty restaurant weirdos and pursue your interests and you'll have a great time. That's what I did when I was 24 and now I'm 40 and still live here in my fifth or sixth totally different situation and it still rules.

I will never deny that this place is a shithole but it's a shithole for reasons that the media has skewed. It's not necessarily the wild west but it is a sewer with light.

Nyc is a good place. Not some dream city where everything goes well and all that. But its good. Just gotta keep an eye on your stuff, and stay aware of your surroundings. Nyc one of the most crazy places, crackheads, bums pissing, crime other crazy stuff. Good places to visit, good transportation which can be filled with bums in the winter and overpacked
