A lot of the new housing is incredibly ugly IMO. Like dormitories. I noticed this recently at the new “luxury” building on the NE block of 86th and Broadway. Stately old buildings with what could have been a u-store-it in the middle. But hey, more housing, right?

it feels like the new part of every other city everywhere. wanna know why? because its the cheapest way to meet construction standards in as many places as possible

NYC just loves over regulation. Same reason NYC is the only place that has those ridiculous PTACs in every room of an apartment, it's just too expensive to build with central air (I love those realtors that call PTACs central in their ads BTW, I guess compared to window air conditioners?). Meanwhile even low rent affordable housing in other locations have been made with central air for decades and decades.

This honestly just reads like depression. There's always been a shitload of annoying ads, construction sites, and areas where it's a pain in the ass to walk around. also, the "overlay of smog" was just an unusually foggy morning, which actually looked pretty cool imho

  1. This sounds more like an American issue than a NYC issue

  2. Are you doing okay?

Friend I don't know where you call home but most major metropolitan areas are filled with non-stop ads and minimalist architecture. Minimalism is the cheapest/quickest way to build upwards, and the non-stop ads in your face are intended to wear you down into buying shit you don't need or even necessarily want.

Also there's more to NYC than just Manhattan. I'd urge you to check out any part of the other boroughs and you'll probably be pleasantly surprised by how "human" everything can be (unless you're in like, Downtown Brooklyn or another shopping/government building district).

Buck up, the world ain't over yet. If you wanna feel better, buy less shit and go for a walk through the park. Forest Park is dope, even little Highland Park is cute as two boots.

The mods are under instruction to remove threads of interest to real New Yorkers.

I've struggled with depression and so have a lot of new yorkers... When you're depressed you naturally walk around thinking "wow, this is all shit." Another person in a bright mood might walk down the exact same block and think "I love this city." If you're seeing darkness and dehumanization everywhere you look, you might be depressed (and there's nothing wrong with that as long as you realize it's a possibility)

Since I've made that post I've been getting better, trying to focus on and situate myself within the neighborhoods that make me feel happy. I think my field of study forces me to view things a certain way, and that kind of mental framework has bled into my day to day.
