Unbelievable how NYC does literally nothing to non-cooperating mentally I’ll people to the expense of its citizens (including normal people and these poor insane people)

how the hell is her soho loft $1287 a month? My tiny east village apartment was going for $2000 in 2007

Because she moved there in 1984 when it was nothing, laying the foundation for what Soho is today.
You are a late stage gentrifier.
If you want a cheap apartment in a hot neighborhood, be born in the early 1960's.

Where are you getting that she moved there in 1984?
Article said she lived there since 2007 and if you google her name it says shes 51 which means she would have been 13 in 1984

rent was also cheaper in 2007

I mean it has to be rent controlled. I can tell you that this building was truly awful until the past few years. There was a Chinese produce wholesaler who operated out of the bottom floor. Every morning at like 2-4 am there were dudes working on the sidewalk organizing produce and yelling at each other. When they left each day, produce had fallen all over, attracting only the most discriminating rats. The maintenance on the building appeared to be zero. I would walk by it most days and wonder why. That there must be rent controlled units in part of the building explains that to me now. Landlords are notorious for letting rent controlled and rent stabilized buildings rot.

I know, I was here, and my rent was $2,000 in the east village and know for a fact that things were not cheaper than that in SoHo, let alone for a full floor loft

They pulled it right out of their ass. Couldn't you tell by the condescending attitude and backhanded insult?

Soho wasn’t 1280 a month back in 2007.

Geez who could have predicted that? If only there were a social science that studied this sort of thing.

How long would it take to recoup the costs of renovating a rent controlled apartment when accounting for monthly expenses?

Depends how much they paid for the building.

How on earth did she get them back. The place looks disgusting and filthy, there’s no way she can take care of 9 dogs when her place looks like that.

I am absolutely disgusted that these innocent creatures were returned to that filth to spend their lives with a mentally ill health hazard such as their "owner" who will no doubt cause some of their deaths. We should all be aghast at this.
misanthpope t1_ix1xj7q wrote
It doesn't need to be universal for her to access it. She probably qualifies for medicaid in NY, which would be free for her then. If she makes too much money for that, she can try buying subsidized insurance. I think you're arguing for compulsory mental health services?

People that are this Ill typically refuse services. They are available.. the loophole is that the person who’s brain isn’t functioning has to agree to services or family has to go to court repeatedly to gain guardianship to forcibly medicate.

This. As someone who works in the healthcare sector in NYC (frequently with unhoused and mentally ill people), there actually are a fair amount of resources for low to no income people with mental illnesses. The issue is that many of them are too consumed by their illness to want to take advantage of said resources, and there’s no way to force them to.

Why does anyone pay rent It seems that squatters don't have to pay Jack s*** and get away with it. We all play by the rules and do what we're supposed to do and get f***** day in and day out and then there's people who just say go f*** yourself I'm not doing nothing and get away with it. I speak from experience as I have a family member who is terrorizing us and playing this game and says to me at least once a week there's nothing you can do to me.
Also I have a Mormon phone hence the asterix.
