Weird when someone posts one of these and your old apartment is in it

Lucky you! The last painting I posted was of my apartment. I guess it’s your turn now!

Nice! did you use acrylic paint?

3

megabulk OP t1_isfg97t wrote

Thanks! I used Holbein acrylic gouache. I’m a big fan. There’s also some colored pencil. And it glows in the dark, too!

haha, i immediately recognized that you’re the creator of that breathtaking studio painting you posted a while ago. i love your style!

I dont think it could even make the turn onto Mott. It should come from Canal.

We I was little, we used to take day trips to go to the store right behind this pic for dried fish for soups and stuff, and then get char siu Bao and eat them in the car on the way home. My dad would get these dried plum…pits i think?…which I thought were so weird…I liked them but I didn’t, but I ate them anyway.

Thanks for the nostalgia

That’s a lovely memory! Thanks for sharing. Now I want some… plum pits? Jujubes, maybe?

It still looks about the same, I think? Even if we’ve lost our innocence.

I miss the candy shop on the left, closed during pandemic. Love their flavored plumb, dried squid and jerkies.

Munchies Paradise! I’ve never been. Their sign looks Japanese.

Alas the storefront is a health store now. Still have 2 locations in Cali and of course HK where it originated. https://www.ajiichibansnacks.com/

Malfunctioned t1_ishf0cy wrote

The original Hong Kong headquarter closed all 20 Hong Kong stores in June due to the severe (and widely criticized) lockdown. Hopefully they (and the NY licensee store) will come back as business recovers.

A family friend used to be part owner of the Mott Street store (franchised from HK headquarter) but later pulled out (most of the snacks were not unique to Aji and the licensing was expensive). He opened his own knockoff store on Main Street Flushing in 2007 or earlier, but it closed during the pandemic.

SukonMatic t1_ishfum4 wrote

Miss the jerkys the most, can find them packaged in supermarkets, but so expensive.

3

megabulk OP t1_isfgmo3 wrote

🙁 Ah well, there’ll be other snack stores. Flushing, maybe.

2

Malfunctioned t1_isk0z9a wrote

Sugartown NYC at nearby 63 Bayard Street seems to be the only loose Asian snack store around. The store is tiny, which may be the reason why it is still hanging around instead of being replaced by another herbal/health store or pharmacy. It is also worthwhile to check the larger supermarkets to see if they have similar snacks in packaged form for (far) less.

Do you sell prints somewhere? I took a look at your post history and didn’t see anything on that but I didn’t scroll too far. I would love a print of one of your pieces!

AYO 7th Gen Honda Accord wagon???

3

megabulk OP t1_isfru1l wrote

Ha! I don’t know cars but I’ll take your word for it. And I’ll take it as a compliment that I rendered it accurately enough that you could identify it!

1

WILLYumD t1_isfskmh wrote

The front end is super recognizable, it’s a good recreation.

Honestly, I’m calling it out because the 7th Gen didn’t come in a wagon, so my eyebrow was definitely raised looking at your painting.

Carry on though, you’ve still captured the essence of Mott St which is something that transcends technical accuracy of a two ton hunk of metal, plastic, and rubber haha

3

megabulk OP t1_isftl6b wrote

Hahaha! I don’t think it’s a wagon! I think my draftsmanship is a little off!

I miss the old Chinatown. Some of my fave memories in the city were from there. Chinatown today isn't even close to what it was in the past. Gentrification really forced many of them out. Sunset Park and Flushinf are basically the new Chinatown.

2

moarwineprs t1_isi8hee wrote

My grandparents used to live on Bayard, a little in from Mott. I used to visit almost every weekend as a kid, then every few weeks as an adult, so this street is very familiar to me (though I don't recall specific details anymore). Brings back memories.

I love this, I would love to buy a print. I lived a few blocks away at the time it was taken ❤️

I typically love scenes of the city (especially chinatown) in the summer or warm weather, especially at night… but this captures a crisp winter day so well, before the holidays… i just love it

Fantastic! I’m so glad you like it and I’d love to sell you a print. You can see the print options here: https://goodnightnur.se/prints/
