We really need some sort of laws to prevent ugly shit like this. If you’re gonna build something it has look like it fits the neighborhood.

I'm actually surprised they have the air rights to do this over there being right next to the Imperial and in the middle of the theatre district/across from Restaurant Row.

Is there an insider competition to design the ugliest shit and built it in NYC?

Is there an ugly skyscraper competition us peasants don’t know about?

sounds like it took them years to collect all the various rights and plots they need for this.

... now that i think about it -- probably? that would at least explain a lot.

Supertalls are kinda cool but this thing is just taking the piss

At least those three low rises held strong and forced the designers to work around them lmao. That's a great middle finger to ugly corporatism

Not nice looking at all. Good for the Playwright Pub for surviving(for now).

It's Times Square. You want them to build an Elmo-shaped skyscraper?

To give you an actual answer, it's in the theatre district. It's across from 3 historical Broadway theaters to the south (Majestic, Golden, Jacobs), right next to the Imperial, down the street from the Rodgers and Lunt, and across from restaurant row, which is mostly brownstones.

If they flipped the top part it would look better. The way it tapers off then gets bigger again is strange.

The word “abomination” comes to mind. Save us from computer-aided architecture!

Y'all I'm pretty sure this is just a weird exploded diagram that's meant to show how the cores in the building are placed.
Whoever did this reporting really shit the bed on this one.

Gary Barnett must be stopped from sacrificing more NYC air rights to fetish objects like this.

These plans have been floating around for the better part of a decade in the real estate industry. I think it’s a little outrageous that things like this can just be “Revealed” to the city the same way I’d ‘reveal’ a present to my girlfriend.
To be clear: I am not a developer, associated with one or the obscene real estate sales industry. It’s enough of an issue for me that part of my parents’ income is from renting my grandmother’s old home to a commercial tenant

Stand on that corner and just do a slow spin while looking at the skyline nearby
I understand where you are coming from as a long term HK resident but it's happening and isn't surprising unfortunately.
Remember when they straight up let that real estate company just lift a historical theater so they could still build a tower over it and just incorporate the "preserved" parts in to the new design?
The only thing we can hope for is that they actually reform what it means to be affordable housing and actually ensure displaced locals and those in need get first priority.

There is one in China I believe, they do love their hideous buildings like the pants skyscraper or that giant coin one.

That’s awful, and completely goes against the look and feel of the neighborhood.
