Starting on October 11, the crown of the Statue of Liberty will be open to the public again after being closed since March 16, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is some very good news and a sign toward normalcy. https://silive.com/news/2022/10/statue-of-libertys-crown-to-open-for-first-time-since-covid-19-pandemic.html

The torch has been closed to the public since like 1911. You have to climb up a ladder in her arm to get the torch. I’ve done it. Ex USPS Park Ranger

Yes probably. It’s a National monument. It’s patrolled both by NPS Park Rangers and USPP law enforcement officers. We swept the entire island everyday looking for people hiding and for hazards left behind.

I used to work in the gift shop. It was always cool to me that the rangers lived on the island
LiveWire_74 t1_iryxozd wrote
Oh cool. I worked there like from 1998-2000. Only a couple rangers chose to live on the island. It’s a tough life. The last boat back is at 9 or 10. You essentially stay on that island all the time. I couldn’t do it.
BronxT t1_is0ts5d wrote
Yes it looked intense. Even working there at the shop, it was only the weekends since I was in HS. Once you were on the island, you were there all day. It was fun times.

The crown was reopened in 2009 and has undergone several periods of closings and reopenings since then.

Yes. I haven’t been able to keep track.

Deets, pls! I imagine it’s not good for a claustrophobic. Is it an arduous climb, one at a time? How many can fit at the top?
LiveWire_74 t1_irw6pil wrote
Even the climb up to the Crown is claustrophobic. From the pedestal level (ie her feet), you walk up a double-helix spiral staircase. It’s smaller than you might imagine. In the summer it gets very hot too. Remember, you are within a copper structure. It’s easily 20 degrees (f) warmer than the outside ambient temp. That’s why we only used to let the first two boats up to the crown. Essentially we closed it by 10:30am.
Wit50- OP t1_irwemx6 wrote
What finally allowed the crown to reopen today. Also, why did it take longer for the pedestal to reopen than Liberty Island, the Statue of Liberty Museum, and Ellis Island Museum. Also, why did it take longer for the crown to reopen than the pedestal.

Idk the answers to these questions. Suffice to say the Dept of the Interior works in mysterious ways.

Those circumstances to the crown I would kinda expect. But Liberty’s arm looks smaller, just a vertical tube and a single ladder within leading to a platform that accommodates what, four at most? Hard to believe it was ever appropriate for public access, even before ~1916.
LiveWire_74 t1_is4c2io wrote
I absolutely agree. I bet by “open the public,” they meant more like open to dignitaries. Not only is it climbing up a ladder, but the ladder is on an angle. Very weird.

The torch? It’s one of the most amazing things Ive ever done. Imagine….you’re outside, just walking around. It’s scary because it’s swaying, but amazing!
captain_222 t1_irufu2e wrote
Did you use to be able to climb up the torch?

Yeah, until ww1 when the Germans set off explosions in the harbor and damaged the torch.
