Thank you orthodox community and brain damaged antivaxxers for bringing us backwards almost 70 years in health care. Let's get childhood rickets back too while we're at it lol

This isn’t “the orthodox community,” it’s a small minority of ultra-orthodox that are spreading it. They’ve been targeted by antivaxxers for years specifically because they have poor science education and will fall for these things.

OK, then, here's a rewrite of the previous comment:

Thank you orthodox community for stubbornly insisting on not teaching your kids science, thereby making them vulnerable to being duped by antivaxxers.

As a Jewish American, we need to do a better job of communicating to these regressive imbeciles. Frankly, it annoys me because it reflects shitty on all of us. For many New Yorkers their only exposure to Jewish ppl are these ultra orthodox loons.

Mom: I just got over Maleria again.

Me: that's great, just survived Covid, bubonic plague, and polio.

Mom: .....

Me: .....

Mom: why are you living there?

Me: it's a new Yorker thing. The tap water is really great!

I call bullshit on this one. They are an embarrassment to Jews, and just because one is Jewish doesn't mean they should keep their mouths shut when people who have bastardized their religion are putting other people's lives at stake.

dagav t1_iu6mmhl wrote

I'm not saying you shouldn't be critical of them. I'm saying that you shouldn't do so in front of non-Jews because it enables antisemitism. For example, what you said, "they are regressive imbeciles", would be extremely antisemitic if it was said by a non-Jew, because the context would be completely different. But now anti-semites can just point at you and say, "See, this guy gets it!' and be empowered to continue.

The Taliban? Are you serious? Do you have any idea how bad the Taliban are? What's the worst thing the Orthodox Jews ever did, not vaccinate their kids?

Who cares what racist assholes think? Not me. I care about being grouped in with primative losers because I'm not one. These assholes are ruining Judaism for the rest of us. I want Jews to be associated with Einstein. Not some jackass with a year 1 ideology about burning bushes and cave man shit

You are trashing your tribesmen of 4000 years for some social credit with anti-semites who in the final analysis will group you in with them anyway. Is it worth it? In 2000 years of antisemitism was it ever worth it?

I'm wondering what kind of authority you think "Jew here" gives you. All it does it whitewash these sentiments for anti-semites.

It means that "Jewish identity" being some sort of monolith is hilariously dumb bullshit.

This guy doesn't speak for me or any other Jew. Fuck outa here with that garbage. Tribalism is for racists.

No. You're a primative. You do not represent modern Jews. You're not chosen by god either. Fuck off with that. I dont have any tribe. I'm living in 2022.

This is not even the HALF of it because there isn't good reporting in Afghanistan. Go do your own research if you want to know more. The Taliban kill, torture, rape, and mutilate men, women, children, and the elderly. If this is just "an ultra conservative sect" then I'd hate to see what your definition of "moderate" is. I'm not even going to validate your comparison with a counterargument.

Are you kidding me what's the worst thing they did let's start with treating women like they are breeding machines who don't deserve an education or a career or a life other than birthing babies. You really need to stop this nonsense. It's embarrassing.

dagav t1_iu6rkj3 wrote

Judaism is exceptionally pro-women. The overwhelming majority of Orthodox Jewish women want to have a lot of kids, they want to be mothers, they don't want to have a career. They think it's their mission from God to have lots of children. What's the problem? Go to any orthodox Jewish woman in Brooklyn and ask her if she's happy and I guarantee you the answer will be a resounding "Yes".

> It's embarrassing.

I'm not embarrassed. Just pointing out that most people here have no idea what they're talking about.

dagav t1_iu6snlt wrote

So when I point out how extremely wrong you are, instead of taking a moment to reflect and think, "Man, am I just talking out of my ass?", you double down? Have you considered that you don't know what you're talking about?

This thread is pretty rough.

This is a specific situation with the Satmar Orthodox sect presence in Orange/Rockland county. They are one of the most conservative Hasidic sects (fun fact: this sect is fiercely Anti-Zionist). One of the main tenets of Judaism is protecting your health, and many of the Orthodox Jews that I've talked to say that their rabbis tell everyone to get vaccinated to protect their health. They all were very enthusiastic about it, and emphasized that they were first in line for each shot, etc.

As well, lots of Orthodox day schools provide robust secular education along with religious teaching, and send many of their students to elite universities. Some of them even make their school days longer than normal so they can fit complete secular education in.

The wide generalizations are frankly a bad look; there is an entire community of hundreds of thousands, belonging to many sects. It makes the community a scapegoat. Do not blame it on all "Hasids" like people in this thread are - it's just not true, and further propagates hate. I hope you all understand my perspective

You sound like my dad. It was fine to eat pork and share pork with other Jews, he said, but not to let anyone non Jewish know that you ate pork. It’s a truly absurd theory.

43

dagav t1_iu6unwm wrote

I would explain the difference if I thought there was any hope of you understanding it. What you are saying is so divorced from reality that I am now extremely suspicious of your motivation to draw a line between Orthodox Jews and the fucking Taliban.

0

dagav t1_iu6vetn wrote

From my understanding your dad had it backwards. Obviously eating pork is not "fine" for a Jew because it's not kosher. And a Jew definitely cannot share pork with another Jew for the same reason. Regarding telling non-Jews they ate pork, I haven't heard any problem with that. However, I think there may be a problem with telling Jews they ate pork because that Jew may then think it was kosher. So your dad's theory sounds absurd because it was incorrect.

dagav t1_iu6vxp7 wrote

How do you even know Orthodox Jews are responsible for this polio? Or are you just assuming? The article doesn't say anything about Jews. Might be wise to be sure before your "crackdown", assuming you care

−19

dagav t1_iu6xws8 wrote

If you reject the Jewish identity then why do you say "Jew here"? What does it mean to be a Jew exactly?

And how can you tell me I don't speak for any other Jews when that's precisely what you are doing when you say, "This guy doesn't speak for any other Jew"?

And why does your Jew card overrule mine? Not that I've even played mine, but I'm a Jew too. What gives you the right to say "Jew here" and try and overrule anything I might say about the Jewish identity, as if my opinion doesn't matter?

They are both religious fundamentalist. The biggest difference is, as Jews we don’t believe in proselytizing, but both groups have a dogmatic adherence to Bronze Age books of “revelation.

Han-Shot_1st t1_iu701zk wrote

I got two starters. 1) schools that actually teach kids math and science. 2) get vaccinated, so we don’t have polio outbreaks, this isn’t some rural part of India, it’s fuckin NYC

dagav t1_iu70kgg wrote

In America we have the right not to teach our kids math and science, sorry but those are the rules.

And where in the article does it say that the polio spread has something to do with Jews?

−66

Han-Shot_1st t1_iu70oo3 wrote

If you’re worried about antisemitism, I got news for you, Jewish communities spreading polio will certainly not help. I do worry about rising antisemitism and that’s why I’m upset with these loons and their regressive dogmatic belief in Bronze Age voodoo. Since they are very visibly Jewish (their garb) their antics reflect on the rest of us.

dagav t1_iu71hmz wrote

I happen to find blaming Jews for antisemitism to be in very poor taste. And Judaism is not "Bronze Age voodoo", it's the foundation of Western civilization.
