It was pepper spray.

The article states, in the same sentence, that it was an unknown substance known to be pepper spray.

The substance is believed to have originated from a so-called "pepper spray can": a strange and ominous device, previously unknown to man.

If someone is whacked out enough to spray a pepper spray can on a train, why are you so quick to assume they aren’t whacked out enough to fill it with a different substance? It’s called responsible reporting (admittedly shocked I’m saying that about the sun) to not state an obvious assumption as fact until it’s actually confirmed as such…

I would argue that writing a deliberately-misleading headline is the opposite of responsible reporting.

"Unknown substance" has a completely different connotation than "substance alleged to be pepper spray."

YanksFan9891 t1_irgydvg wrote

That is a fair and valid point. Not sure I agree with it, because your preference still implies something it may be not, whereas “unknown substance” is the most exact and correct term for what it actually is at the time the article was written. I don’t necessarily disagree with you either though. See where you’re coming from.

lol! You think some dumbass who does something like this has the equipment to pour substances in a sealed and pressurized can lying around in their basement. Smh

My housemate was there. She said people were vomiting and passing out and she inahled it and her eyes didnt hurt at all but she said it felt like inhaling fiber glass. Not so sure it's pepper spray.

an_ornamental_hermit t1_irgr3wi wrote

That is terrifying, and it makes me wonder whether they are saying "pepper spray" to avoid panic. I am sorry for your housemate and I hope she is ok.

Thank you. I keep seeing this headline posted and it makes it sound like it was some new mysterious bio weapon chemical being unleashed upon the city

The suspect was drinking an unknown substance known as “White Claw.”

Toilethyme t1_irgu7rp wrote

People were mad panicked and thought it was sarin gas or some kind of chemical attack

I used to be a valet parking attendant. And one time I was working in the key house and I got a set with pepper spray or mace. Long story short I was fiddling with it and it accidentally went off. Just like the tiniest amount in the modular unit we used as the key house. It was awful... I's use the word unbearable but I didn't want to let anyone on that I'd done the thing so I sat there being maced just doing my job while the spray evenly dissipated through the key house and everyone started coughing and vomiting everywhere.

TLDR; dont fuck with pepper spray.

Any other updates? Im wondering if this was a case of someone spraying to hurt passangers, or defending themselves and others were not targeted.

We're allowing The Sun as a news source on this sub now?

For everyone on here that says “I always carry pepper spray with me”, please don’t. It’s not going to help you, it’s just going to cause mass chaos and shut the trains down for hours.

HugeLegalBriefs t1_irfneps wrote

That’s why I only carry garlic spray. You just never know when a vampire or an unseasoned gravy is going to jump you.

Silo-Joe t1_irh3dm6 wrote

I prefer Funion spray. It smells nice and detracts the attached by getting their fingers all greasy.

TurbulentArea69 t1_irfo1bc wrote

Honestly, that might be enough to freak someone out and get them away from you.

Yeah who needs any protection? Just let these deranged addicts with a dozen priors terrorize you til the cops come and take them away so they can be released again.

You could have a taser. That won’t cause subway service to get shut down.

Much harder to conceal if you don't have a purse or like your self defense a zipped bag away, harder to learn to use and use effectively in a high stress situation, prohibitively expensive cartridges, makes a loud crackling noise that will scare everyone around you half out of their brains...

But sure, grab a taser instead...

I’ll gladly take angry calls from the MTA and NYPD rather than an ER doctor if either of my daughters legit need to use their cans of train stopper.

Thank you everyone for the upvotes. The tips of my thumbs have decided that engaging with this friendly individual any more is a waste of skin cells.

More likely is that one of your daughters will accidentally discharge their spray than use it on someone.

Pretty broad brush you’re painting with. Some people are smarter and more coordinated than others. Three years ago I would have agreed with you just on whether it’s warranted or not. There are a lot more crazy people on the streets and in the subways these days. What would you do for protection if you were a very pretty 20 yo female living in the Penn station area?

10

TurbulentArea69 t1_irg3fqd wrote

Lol you don’t even live here.

My parents never felt any need to treat me like a child when I moved here at 20.

Also, the people being attacked aren’t disproportionately “pretty” so don’t worry about how hot your daughter is.

Because the only place one might use it is on a busy subway car, of course
