Partway correct. Long Island contains two of New York City's boroughs, Brooklyn and Queens. New York City also includes Manhattan, Bronx and Staten Island. Long Island also contains other counties.

That is incorrect. NYC is made up of 5 boroughs: Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx, and Staten Island. Long Island is east of NYC. It is completely separate of NYC.

Brooklyn and Queens are physically on the landmass known as Long Island

What you're calling incorrect is actually correct.

Long Island. I think you're conflating the cultural/political identity of Long Island with the landmass of Log Island. Brooklyn and Queens are located in the landmass of Long Island. From a cultural and political sense, Long Island refers to Nassau and Suffolk and excludes Queens and Brooklyn which are part of a larger NYC identity.

Actually the entire island of Long Island has 4 counties. Kings county (Brooklyn), Queens county, Suffolk County and Nassau county. Of the 4, 2 are part of the 5 boroughs that make us NYC. When making a reference to Long Island they usually refer to Nassau and Suffolk county.

Geographically, Brooklyn and Queens are on Long Island even if culturally, what we think of as "Long Island" is Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Well I guess boarders mean nothing. If you told someone you were going to Long Island and took them to Brooklyn or Queens that would not be where they were asking to go. Now is queens physically attached to Long Island yes but they are not apart of the same city or government and have a different vibe from NYC.

Just remember that OPs coworker states that NYC is ON Long Island and it partially is on the landmass named Long Island. Long Island is an island that contains parts of NYC. That was the question.

The whole island is called Long Island … within the island of Long Island are a couple counties (Kings and Queens) that are incorporated as part of the City of New York
