I had lived in Pelham bay park area for like over 5 years and have never heard reports of any in that area. Plenty of skunks, raccoons even rabbits one particular year. Just 5 months ago I moved across the bx to spuyten duyvil and have had numerous run-ins with coyotes. They are much larger than I expected and despite the shared article they are a big fan of ripping into garbage bags and are more frequent on garbage collection nights.

I’ve seen plenty of coyotes in Pelham Bay Park. Saw one in my backyard on City Island, guess it must have came over the bridge one day.

Well, remember they don’t like humans and will hide from us. Anything is possible. Spuyten-Duyvil is the Bronx still lol.

Yeah I moved across the bx to the westside of it. The ones I encountered, maybe they were adolescents, did not hide from me at all. They all were quite curious and would walk towards me. When I’m alone it’s fine but it freaks me out when I’m walking my two small dogs

Yes, please, no unleashed dog walking ever especially if they are small. Do the coyotes try to scare them or lunge at them?

Last time we all just stared at each other until it turned away back into the woods. A few days later a lady I know encountered one while walking her large 70lb dog but she did the wrong thing and ran from it so it “chased her down the block” according to her. I’m sure she exaggerated a little but I heard her screaming at 1 in the morning so she was no for sure scared

Yeah, you guys did the right thing. The coyote knew you weren’t going to hurt him and no longer saw you as a threat so he walked away. I have similar encounters with the stray / feral cats where I live lol. Except I am usually talking to them or they startle me. And an opossum. Thank goodness I know what they look like or I would have lost my mind. I didn’t at first I was like what is that creature.
But I don’t want your neighbor to complain and get the coyotes put down though. She shouldn’t have ran from it.

My uncle lives in White Plains and you can sometimes hear coyotes howling at night from his backyard. Been that way for years. I suppose it’s not that crazy that some may wander down from Westchester. I still wouldn’t want to come across one

Must be an added effect during Halloween lol. I wouldn’t want them to surprise me. Maybe if I was looking out of a window or something.

If I were a coyote I'd come to NYC for the rats. There's an endless supply of them.

I know, during the lockdown they were even more prevalent. A suburban neighborhood in IL got a herd of deer roaming their streets; we got rats.😢

I saw a coyote one night in Central Park a couple years ago. Took a good moment to process exactly what I was seeing, but once it clicked it was sooo cool. Once in a lifetime sighting!

Wow, nice. I read that there is an occasional deer or two there but they seem to scoop them up right up out of harms way. There was a deer in central Harlem during Xmas once but it didn’t survive animal control or they euthanized it.

Coyotes are mostly scavengers but they will definitely pick off small pets if you leave them around. When I was biking in the aqueducts in Westchester I had one randomly Chase my bike until it saw a rabbit that was near my path and decided to switch targets that at I was so damn confused lol. I also had one try to hop across traffic to try to attack me but gave up when traffic was too much. It's really weird when they want to engage because they're half the size of my dog and I'd consider him on the medium to slightly large scale for dogs as he's around 80lbs

I know this is a coyote article, but I hate chimpanzees.

This is so wild. They are probably very abundant in Van Cortlandt Park and Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx. Went to high school in the Pelham Bay section; however, I have never been to the park.
Edit: There also was a Bronx Park siting recently very early morning.
