I highly recommend everyone listen to the 911 call linked to this article. It's the most Staten Island no-nonsense conversation I've ever heard. These kids are unphased and the operator is annoyed bordering on amused.

Yea, the dispatcher did a great job, as did the firefighters. All in all a great job and save by all.

Absolutely! And the kids stayed pretty calm and seemed to have a little fun when they got the "yell for help."

TonyzTone t1_jdeso25 wrote

That was blood curdling. But then I remembered they were told to scream and were just doing as recommended

I’m a little amazed he didn’t get frustrated and say “I know the fuckin’ area just answer the fuckin’ questions.”

TonyzTone t1_jdesqj4 wrote

He kind of did. LOL

Good training and kept calm, but in the most NY way.

It sounded like a second dispatcher came on at one point. I like the idea that they were like, get Mike he knows the sewers!

The mole people didn't take kindly to the kids invading their home

Article doesn’t even mention why they went into the sewer. Just curious for the reason.

Want the subway? Nah too crowded. Let’s pop down in the sewer to get home

Have you ever met a 12 year old boy? Why would you even ask why they did a reckless thing.

When I was that age, my days mostly consisted of getting friends together, looking for places that are hard to get to, and going there. We pretty much took over all the abandoned train tracks in Queens.

My friends and I used to break into unused buildings and were chased by cops on multiple occasions, and all literally because we were bored.

Kids are dumb as hell.

My friends and I would climb down to the train tracks and put coins on it for the train to press. Did it a few times in jr high & HS. Mentioned it to my mom in my mid-forties and she turned pale and yelled at me. I thought I would be safe, like a statute of limitations - was kind of glad to go home after that. Never going to tell her the other stupid stuff I did as a kid.

Rookie mistake you gotta ease her in with the small stuff. I recently told my mother about how many times I actually skipped my chemistry class (I pretty much went once a week if that by the second semester) even though she only thought it was the few times I got detention. I was only getting the detention for showing up late to class so I just decided to not go at all. I stopped getting detention and my mom stopped getting calls home. She did not like the full story but 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️now she knows.

Never underestimate a 12 year old boy's ability to end up in a dumb as fuck situation.

hhaha we did this shit when i was young but in Piermont on those tunnels leading up to the side of the mountain by 9w.

Holy shit there was a snake at the end of one of the ladders leading out to the other side of 9w. Saw it and we all noped out and had to climb back down. There were certain parts that there were hissing sounds too and it was dark as shit. Real scary stuff. Stay out of tunnels gents.

Funny thing this article fails to mention, is that staten island in of itself is the sewer drain for NY!

Looks like a bunch of cops are downvoting you for this response, but you’re not wrong. Staten Island is literally where the rest of New York sends our garbage. SI residents can be as salty about it as they like, but it won’t be any less true.

Fresh Kills Landfill closed in 2001, so it’s literally untrue.

Sent, I apologize for using the incorrect tense. The island is still a ducking dump.

Interesting to see an upvoted racist comment at the end of this thread. Sorta confirms what the rest of us think about Staten Island.

Not racist, it historically referred to those with Down’s Syndrome. Not much better but still.
