I'd start with leasebreak or any similar site you can find to pick a shorter term rental while deciding on a neighborhood for the longer term.
This will also get your feet on the ground here so that you can really look at places before deciding on what you want and what sacrifices you're willing to make on that longer term lease.
Good luck with the move and welcome to NYC!

Thank you so much! I am having a look now, do you know if there is a bond you need to pay for rentals on this site? As I have never rented a place in America, I’m unsure how it works

I have no idea. My wife found the site when we were planning to renovate our apartment and were going to move out for the renovation. But, that never happened. So, we haven't used the site yet.
This is their FAQ page. The last question says that for other questions you can email them and gives an email.
