Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but if she's not profiteering or taking advantage of systems designed to support disabled people then it comes down to her choice to be in a wheelchair. In that case, that's just how she rolls.

He does not appear to be competing in the Persecution Olympics, so whatever.
Perhaps a mental health professional could provide some solace.

Complex situation. The article does in some ways cover it for those of us with no background, but to summarize; it’s possible to have different ideas about who you are that doesn’t exactly fit with how you have been perceived by others around you. But that’s pretty much any situation with trans people making discoveries about themselves. Facebook has been no shortage of surprises as former co workers have come out as trans in recent years.
Bit I guess the more prominent focus here is on able bodied autonomy, sense it does seem strange that people would willingly affect their own mobility over their own perceived notions of who they em are meant to be.

This person has 2 different things going on. The first is the gender dysphoria, which why she identifies as a woman. The second is body integrity disorder, which is super weird, and super scary. Basically it means that your mental map of your body doesn't include parts that you have. Like legs for instance. People with this disorder have resorted to amputating their own limbs. What's really fascinating is that we know this is something that happens physically in the brain because it often comes about due to brain damage from accidents and strokes and stuff.

I'm not sure what the treatment is for body integrity disorder (if any), but the article doesn't seem to be describing mental illness? For something to be a mental illness it needs to cause personal distress or interfere with your social or occupational functioning.

She, and I'm reluctant to trust the reporting of an anti-trans blog as though it is a reliable source for anything.

It's definitely quirky, but people can be quirky without it being mental illness. If it causes conflict because it is taking up resources needed for people who are physically disabled, or if it places a strain on their relationships with family and friends, then it does interfere with social functioning.

I guess as long as she doesn’t use handicapped parking. Like my sister has MS. If I saw someone masquerading as disabled when my sister actually is and we couldn’t get a parking spot that would infuriate me.

I also have MS and agree as long as she doesn’t take advantage of services for disabled people, such as handicapped parking, thus taking it away from a person who is legitimately disabled. To me it’s a bit offensive that someone would wish this on themselves but I can’t stop anyone.

It is kind of offensive, but then again they have mental issues so whatever, maybe they are handicapped
jaqjaw t1_iuskw0w wrote
Exactly, you don’t do that if you’re totally mentally healthy

From a quick bit of research; there is no current recognized treatment for BID, although antidepressants and cognitive behavioral therapy may have some effect. Interestingly those who have self-amputated report they are much happier and don't regret it.
Now, transphobes LOVE to try to claim that mental illness/ / delusions are responsible for people being trans and they need 'treatment' and not 'encouragement' but of course absolutely none of them have ever read a single bit of transgender-related science.
the TLDR of it; anti-psychotic and other psychiatric meds do not work at all for gender dysphoria, electroshocks neither, no behavioral therapy either. You know what does actually work reducing the stress related to dysphoria? letting trans people fucking exist.
This isn't 'woke' agenda, it's the result of decades of science done by incredibly bigoted people who tried literally everything they could to 'de-trans' people, including lobotomies, and it never worked. Medicine should a) follow evidence not agenda b) exist to lessen the suffering of people.
