I'm not sure what the treatment is for body integrity disorder (if any), but the article doesn't seem to be describing mental illness? For something to be a mental illness it needs to cause personal distress or interfere with your social or occupational functioning.

From a quick bit of research; there is no current recognized treatment for BID, although antidepressants and cognitive behavioral therapy may have some effect. Interestingly those who have self-amputated report they are much happier and don't regret it.
Now, transphobes LOVE to try to claim that mental illness/ / delusions are responsible for people being trans and they need 'treatment' and not 'encouragement' but of course absolutely none of them have ever read a single bit of transgender-related science.
the TLDR of it; anti-psychotic and other psychiatric meds do not work at all for gender dysphoria, electroshocks neither, no behavioral therapy either. You know what does actually work reducing the stress related to dysphoria? letting trans people fucking exist.
This isn't 'woke' agenda, it's the result of decades of science done by incredibly bigoted people who tried literally everything they could to 'de-trans' people, including lobotomies, and it never worked. Medicine should a) follow evidence not agenda b) exist to lessen the suffering of people.

All of these things are manifestly true, yes.
I miss the days when people could not wall themselves off from reality (and I don't mean trans people, I mean the mainstream medical establishments).

It's definitely quirky, but people can be quirky without it being mental illness. If it causes conflict because it is taking up resources needed for people who are physically disabled, or if it places a strain on their relationships with family and friends, then it does interfere with social functioning.

You’d think the dude in Canada with the giant rubber boobs also probably needs a doctor as well.
