He isn't even the first MP this has happened to, Nadine Dorries also did this, and was suspended for it. So it's not exactly without precedent.

Honestly, every day is an adventure with the tory party.
It's like they sat down to brainstorm the most impactful bad ideas to avoid ever doing, and then mixed it up with the day's agenda.

I’d give anything for another The Thick if it series, just for a bit of political normalcy

I've never seen "I'm a celeb". Is it that bad that it's incompatible with being a Conservative MP? What kind of programme is ok for an MP to be on?
Wrinkled_giga_brain t1_iumzbzj wrote
I think the requirement for Im a Celeb means that he could be away for months depending on how long he lasts before being voted out. Which would mean potentially months of his constituents not being represented.
I've never followed it either so no idea how long it runs for, but its essentially "just you and other celebs out in a remote location with no knowledge on what is happening in the rest of the world until you are the least popular that week and voted out."

Thanks for the background, I was a bit confused too...I was just assuming it was a show like, idk, Jeopardy where it's one day of filming that then gets edited into a bunch of weekly shows.
Being Survival-style makes more sense.
If you're taking followup questions - who is the suspending authority? The article says it's the guy in charge of Tory MP discipline; is that someone who is also an MP that the party has decided should be the majority leader like US congress does, or are they someone in the party but outside the government who only does intra-party stuff?

I told this guy what I thought of him once. It didn't go down well. I wouldn't trust him an inch.

Wow. "Completely out of touch" plus "being an elected official"... is this dude really that clueless or is he admitting an unspoken truth?

Simon Hart is the "Chief Whip" of the Conservative Party. This is a colourful term which means he is the disciplinarian of the parliamentary Conservative Party. He is an MP, in fact I think the role is only open to MPs, but not the Party chairman or leader.

It is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it... - Douglas Adams (not the full quote, but enough)

The best? I'd settle for someone with a bit of wit, fresh out of a proper university degree (science, engineering, medicine etc) who simply gave a shit about the country and their constituents, rather than feathering their own nests.
The country is mostly capable of managing itself. MPs don't do an awful lot; which is why they have so much time for writing books, going on TV or having second jobs.

So this guy is elected by his constituents and then decides to go and dick around on TV?
It’s just not good enough- the whole parliamentary process is fubar. We should attract and elect the best amongst us to lead and represent our interests. Instead we get endless talentless clowns.
