Renters need rights. Creepy landlords shouldn't have keys to your dwelling if your paying money. That should be optional. If you dint want to give them a key you can pay them for the locksmith in the off chance there is a real emergency that can't wait an hour for me to drive home.

For an unlawful eviction. In the UK changing the locks without a court order. Would result in an urgent court order to allow the tennant back in and substantial fines in the region of £2,000. And that's just for being locked out over a weekend. Before getting a court order on the Monday.

What I got from the article was: Property management company decided to abdicate the few duties they perform to a tenant who was not really qualified to manage anything. Property mgmt outfits are parasites on a good day, but this one couldn't even be bothered to do their own evil

Landlording should be illegal. It is abhorrent and repulsive. It should be considered a human rights violation to be a landlord.

This is a lot more complicated than it looks, from the description in the article. That said, the Canadian court did find the 'landlord' was in the wrong.
