That's not a "rig", that is 11 "rigs" or more. Assuming 300 watts each, which is really low given that's just one video card at full power, it would be $665 per month (28 cents/kwh in MA). For three years, that would be $18k. Or, maybe they consume 600 watts each for 1.5 years.

Those types of rigs (ASICS) can easily run at 1,000 to 3,000 watts each. (Not disputing your general math. Only the assumption that these are only using 300 watts each.)

Got a chuckle from me. Also those things are loud like vacuum cleaners on full power

Yeah and they fry out easy if you aren't careful. Power supply connectors were black on mine after neglecting it for a week

First report is from SMH in Australia and used local currency, second from Faux news in USA and also used local currency.

Exchange rate currently 1 AUD = 0.67 USD so the "almost half a billion" AUD in the first article equals the "more than 300 million" USD in the second.

Still kinda smart. And I thought I was crafty by having an Aerogarden at work...

If you'd only read the article, you wouldn't need to do the calculations since $18,000 is given as the exact figure.

Well then even more credit to the guy for getting the math spot-on correct even though he didn't read the article

Or he did read the article, and calculated the total down to a per month to make it seem like he got it spot on without reading the article.

I read the article, got the $18k, and tried to figure out how a "rig" would use $18k. It only makes sense if it is 11+ rigs because one just isn't going to use that much. But with 11 rigs, it can be possible.

He could have them in parallel/clustered, so despite being several physical devices it would not be incorrect to call them one mining rig/system.
