You take a potentially wonderful experience that allows your mind to process information from different points of view and potentially lead you to greater insight and distort it into a tool of manipulation by proclaiming an imaginary being is directing things and so you are now a member of the club and the club needs lots of money.

Exactly. Religion does not deliver, and so it looks for something that can.

And then, like always, religion eats it.

I thought these churches were mostly constructed to be exempt from the drug laws and that the founders, members and visitors were mostly in it for the drugs, which in turn can give you a spiritual experience, that can be celebrated, and be the foundation for some community. They have to keep up the appearances of being a church without laughing too much. But I could be wrong.
