The dude started on the wrong trail without a paper map and compass, barely any actual food to cook with his portable stove, and two large knives. Killed a rattlesnake inside the trail cabin he slept in but didn't bother trying to cook and eat it. Then to top his streak of stupidity, he set a tree on fire then walked away hoping it would signal aid. Fuck him

Yeah he should Definitely should be held accountable for his negligence.

I think a fair punishment would be to require him to replant trees where they were decimated by the fire. He could do it on weekends and still keep his regular job. If he has one.

I could go for that. I would want him to use his own money for it or repay any money that is spent on it.

17 miles isn’t even hard- didn’t this guy also drink his own pee because he didn’t bring enough water? He wasn’t even out there a full day correct?

No he was out there for longer than a full day. He ended up having to sleep in a cabin on the trail. To be fair he did develop rhabdomyolysis which is extremely painful and makes walking almost impossible without searing pain. BUT he only developed this because he didn't bring nearly enough water and picked a trail he wasn't capable of doing
