I wonder if the scratcher is like a punishment for staying up late. I don't think you can convince all of campus to go to bed on time, but i also think it only goes after those that feel guilty for staying up late because the last victim became the scratcher (or it became him..) and you said it was like a grasshopper.. but Pinocchio conscious was a cricket (not too dissimilar)..
