Seems like she only asks if people can actually provide and if they know about her. Op's kids seem fine despite never paying tribute, and she didn't seem to ask other hotel guests and staff despite going out there.

If you were deep asleep when she was coming through, you'd probably get off the hook or she would wait for you to wake before asking.
